Training for Becoming a Professional Actor

by John Fisher

There is tons more to being an actor than being theatrical, loud or good at receiving attention. If you feel like you are very serious about acting then you are going to need lots of training. Get big amounts of training.

When people think of training for acting, they think about taking classes, classes can be on the high school scale, college or independent acting school scale. Classes from different teachers should be where you get most of your training. Find out what programs are available in your area. Talk to the teachers and learners to get a clear idea of the teaching styler, curriculum, etc. Be careful about committing to long-term contracts without first attending some classes even by audit if necessary. You might not adore the way the teacher teaches or the teachers morals but you are stuck in a contract that does not work for you. Some teachers are really good, but you may find one that you dislike. I have discovered knowledge from every single teacher Ive hadeven the ones I didnt like. Some teachers are really interested in teaching you, others are more interested in relieving you of your money.

Classes are offered on a big variety of areas, such as auditioning, cold-reading, scene study, the use of a teleprompter, voice projection, accents and dialects, stage directions, stage fighting, singing and tons more. Get as much training as you can, one of the things that you actually have control over is the developing of your skill in acting. An actor should always be training in some degree or another.

Other than classes, there are a lot of things you can do to enhance your education. Just examining television, plays, and commercials and paying close attention to the things that the actors do and how they do what they do, can be enormously helpful. Just remember that you must pay close attention to the actors, instead of being entertained like you would normally watch a movie for. Study great parts over and over, taking notes if thats helpful. Watch people who are known for being great actors the most. There are tons of people who act worthy of your studying. As you watch movies, or scenes, write on a piece of paper why you like that specific part. What thoughts went through your head when you saw this scene? What were you feeling? What would you have done differently?

A good way to study actors is to get work as a background player, or an extra for TV shows and movies. You dont need to be a {skillful|great|good actor to get this type of work, and it will not pay good, but it will help you see what happens behind sets and will give you a good idea about acting. Ive enjoyed seeing lots of actors with much experience, and as a bonus I got paid to do it, by working as an extra, both in Hollywood, and different smaller places. More aboutbeing an extra..

Another good help to becoming an actor is to read. Reading opens your mind to different styles of writing and subjects. Read fabulous writings. Actors are really students of life and humanity. The greater amount you learn about the world and the people in it, the greater actor you will become. And during the time that you will be reading make sure that you spend some time with Shakespeare (even if you need to use Cliffs Notes), because Shakespeare was a master of the written word and human emotion. Read screenplays as well. Get aquainted with the manner in which scripts are formatted, and how movements are described in the written word. Practice parts from movies in the mirror or with a friend.

Next article we will cover some more training ideas. Stay tuned, and well see YOU in the movies.
