Choosing an Electrologist

What to Look For

by Ronni Kolotkin

When my clients come to the end of their hair removal treatments they always tell me that electrolysis was the best investment that they ever made. Before making the decision to have electrolysis treatments, you must be sure that you are spending your time and money with a qualified Electrologist.

Here are 4 important things you should look for in an Electrologist:

1. Free 15 minute Consultation. Any professional Electrologist should offer a free 15 minute consultation before you commit to treatments. This is very important for many reasons. You will want to be sure you are comfortable and confident with the Electrologist’s personality, knowledge and professionalism. It’s great if you can meet them & check out their office to make sure it is a place that you feel comfortable going to for something as important and personal as permanent hair removal.

2. Disposable Needles. The use of disposable needles is very important. Always call ahead and find out if they use disposable needles for electrolysis. If the Electrologist’s office tells you that they keep a needle for you on file, don’t make an appointment with them. Each and every time you go for an appointment, it is of the utmost importance that a new needle is taken from a sterile package in front of you.

3. Punctuality & Professionalism. Your Electrologist should be respectful of your time! At Ronni Kolotkin’s office, we make every attempt to see our clients on schedule. People coming to my New York City office are usually very busy and have places to go and people to see and don’t have time to sit around waiting for someone who is running late and doesn’t respect their time. I would also be careful to find out if the Electrologist answers the phone during treatments. This is not only very unprofessional, but also unsanitary and a waste of your valuable time.

4. No Tweezing. Once you decide to have hair removal treatment with an Electrologist, make sure that you don’t feel your hair being tweezed out. It’s OK to occasionally feel a gentle tug; this must be done to see if the hair will release from the follicle. If the Electrologist is tweezing your hair or not using a proper amount of current, it is likely that hair will never be permanently removed! You should never feel your hair being pulled out and you should never tweeze, wax or thread hair in an area you are having electrolysis on, or the electrolysis will be unsuccessful!

By checking on these 4 important things with your new Electrologist, you can be certain you are receiving excellent hair removal treatments. Remember: never have electrolysis treatments with someone you are uncomfortable with. Your electrolysis experience should be as comfortable and pain-free as possible!
