Getting the Right Curtain Pole for Your Home

by Jamie Simpson

Pole style curtain rods are a particular curtain rod type this has a pole or dowel like form. They often have a fairly large diameter in comparison with other types of curtain rods. They are recommended for hanging larger drapes and long curtains, though they can be used for any type of curtain application in which the curtains have loops that can fit around the dowel.

Outside of this, the following are some other considerations for selecting the right curtain pole:

Window Size

The window size affects what type of poles you should select in a number of ways. For one thing, the length of the curtain pole or poles will be determined by the width of the window. And this in turn will affect how large the diameter needs to be: the longer the pole the larger diameter usually has to in order to support the weight of the curtains or drapes effectively. Window size is also important from a stylistic perspective. Thicker poles can often overwhelm smaller windows, so you should go for smaller diameters with smaller windows. Conversely, thinner diameter poles can be overpowered by large windows, so go in these cases for larger diameters.

Curtain or Drape Weight and Length

The curtain weight and length affect pole types as well. Specifically, you'll need larger diameter poles to support larger and heavier curtains. Greater diameter supports greater weight. And stylistically this tends to hold true as well. Longer curtains look better with larger poles and shorter lighter curtains tend to work better visually with thinner poles.

Décor

Once you've looked at these basic considerations, you can turn your attention to more subtle stylistic elements. The décor of a room should be complimented by the type of pole you choose. For large or formal rooms like dining rooms or living rooms, you may want to use metal or ornate wooden poles. These have a more majestic look to them and go well in rooms where you will be entertaining guests and possibly having social events. For rooms like bedrooms, kitchens, dens, and bathrooms, you will most likely have smaller windows and should thus think in terms of more thin, lightweight, and possibly less ornate poles.

Cost

Cost is an important consideration in selecting a pole as well. As with any other item, there are higher end and lower end products available to consumers. For high end designer poles and vintage antiques you are going to be paying much more than for simple poles available at home centres and the like. Suit the pole type to your budget and realize that for uniformity you will have to be purchasing a large number of poles. You need to have a good clear sense of exactly how many curtain poles you will need so that you can calculate your costs accurately.

Choose the best type of pole for your needs by taking all these factors into considerations. Poles are a classic and elegant window accessory that can really enhance the look of a window and a room in general. Maximize the aesthetic and functional advantages of poles by selecting them carefully and with attention to all the levels on which they work.
