The Advantages of Lasik Eye Surgery

by Byron Dyson

LASIK is the process of using a laser below the corneal flap in situ to reshap the cornea and stands for laser in situ keratomileusis. Improve vision and reduce or eliminate the need for glassess or contact lenses can only be done therough a method that utilizes a highly technological laser designed to treat refractive errors. The transparent front is the current shape of the cornea, which is altered in the laser procedure.

The thin-hinged corneal flap is created using a microkeratome during the LASIK procedure by an advanced eye surgeon. The surgeon then pulls back the flap to expose the underlying corneal tissue, and then the excimer laser ablates and reshapes the cornea in a unique pre-specified pattern for each patient. Without the situ, the flap is then most sensitively modified onto the underlying cornea. There are a variety of different types of lasers used in ophthalmology. The excimer laser is used on all the different LASIK procedures, making them all very similar. Visx, Wavelight, Alcon and Bausch & Lomb are but a few laser manufacturerers that have designed specific excimer lasers. The femtosecond laser, a completely unique type of laser, can be selected as opposed to a mechanical microkeratome to produce the LASIK corneal. Though many want it, refractive surgery is for many people, but not all. There are specific questions that you should ask yourself before considering LASIK or other similar procedures in addition to having a complete eye examination to conclude if you are a good candidate for the procedure. For example, the risk of surgical complications are relatively low, but are you willing to accept them? Are there any health condidtions with which we need to be aware? Can I afford Lasik eye surgery? Decisions should be based on a fair evaluation of these questions.

Scientifically shown to be safe, LASIK has been very effective in the majority of cases as a sight solution. If you are in the care of an experienced surgeon, you will probably be pleased with your results as long as you have reasonable expectations and have been screened very carefully. The advantages of LASIK are many.

Most levels of nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism are usually corrected with the LASIK procedure. The procedure is fast, usually lasting only five to ten minutes, and is virtually painless. LASIK is very precise and results are completely accurate because the laser is guided by a computer. Enhancements are possible, even a few years after the initial surgery, although in most cases, a single treatment does the trick.

Most people believe that LASIK worth the risk because it is conducted in a method that ensures your comfort and safety, though it is a high level surgery. Research and development on the LASIK procedure should enable the mainstream public to take advantagwe of this surgery witrh confidence and let them continue their lives with great vision. LASIK is a vision managing procedure that is unlike any other!
