No comparison needed for board shorts vs. grappling shorts or mma jiu jitsu gi fighter shorts

by Jaky Moorey

Any beginner in jiu jitsu gi may make the mistake of thinking board shorts are the same as mma fight shorts. However, some board shorts are not the same as mma fight shorts because mma fight shorts are specifically made for Brazilian ji jitsu and some custom fight shorts are longer and made more with wrestlers in mind. Shorts that are not made for jiu jitsu gi specifically may not be the best to wear during practices because they can bunch up when grappling or possibly fall off if they aren’t tight.

Why buy shorts made especially for jiu jitsu gi followers? Made of stronger materials, these shorts made for jiu jitsu gi beginners or champions are made of stronger, more breathable material. This allows even the most jiu jitsu novice to enjoy shorts that will keep them cool and dry during hour-long workouts or competition. These shorts do not rip out and can endure repeated washings because they are made of more durable material than the standard shorts.

What to look for when purchasing grappling shorts? Keep in mind that you do not want any external zippers, laces or buttons on shorts during competition. These can be extremely dangerous because they can cause injury to another fighter and it is illegal to fight with any shorts that leave these uncovered or exposed. This is why any “old” shorts will not work for match competition and why beginners should invest in grappling shorts specifically for their discipline.

Try to find grappling shorts that allow 2-way or 4-way stretch and are not uncomfortably tight, but are snug enough. Most grappling shorts are made of breathable material and are better than other types of shorts for practice because they do not bunch up when. Many companies sell grappling shorts so finding the right brand for you might require a “trial and error” method.

What’s the right size in grappling shorts? As with any clothing, some companies will size their shorts a little larger and they might fit perfectly. Other shorts may be too big and require would-be purchasers to get the next size down. Because not everybody’s shape is the same, some practicing this martial art may need a period of trial and error or asking a representative of the brand you wish to buy may also help you find the size that best fits.
