As you sit there and read every word or this article you will be amazed at what you will learn about mediation and the fascinating benefits it has on your well being. Meditation has plenty of benefits but it is especially beneficial to your well being. This article is going to show you some of these benefits. It will be looking at the effect of meditation on the decrease in the stress hormone, decreased cigarette, alcohol and drug abuse, and improved perception and memory.

Stress in any form is bad for your wellbeing. Plasma cortisol is a stress hormone that builds up over time because we under normal circumstances have no way of getting rid of. In stone-age times we accounted stress if a predator chased us. The hormone made us perform better to be able to escape danger and as we ran we used up the hormone so it did not stay unneeded in our body for longer than necessary. In our busy lives today we meet a lot of stress but the stress hormones stay stuck within because we have no release in escaping. The stress hormone can be blamed for weight problems, depression and general poor functioning. Research into meditation has shown that plasma cortisol decreased with meditation practice, but no great changes were significant when looking at the effects of ordinary relaxation which the control group did. In a different study that followed people in a work environment who were practicing meditation on a regular basis, showed that these practitioners appeared more relaxed in themselves. Bigger reduction in anxiety and lowered tension at work, when compared with the control group. Meditation appears to absolutely assist in reducing stress and helping you to relax.

Added to meditation seeming to improve wellbeing it seems to help in cutting down the use of abusive substances. In an analysis of 198 independent treatment outcomes it was found that clients practicing meditation produced a much larger reduction in the use of tobacco, alcohol, and illicit drugs that standard substance abuse treatments (e.g. counselling, pharmacological treatments) or prevention programs (e.g.programs to disuade peer-pressure and encourage personal development). The normal approved treatment programs had effects which showed decreases after three months. Over an 18 to 22 month period of study it was found that meditation's effects led to total abstinence from tobacco, alcohol and illicit drugs in a range from 50% to 89% cases.

The last topic I am looking at here is how meditation can improve perception and memory of people. In a study among college students it was found that the group, that had been instructed in meditation, improved in performance, over a two week period, on a perceptual and short term memory test, identifying letter sequences which were shown to them rapidly. The group they were compared to were randomly assigned to having a rest, with closed eyes, twice a day, or who made no change in their daily routine.

Three different areas that practicing meditation can help.Your wellbeing, by getting rid of the stock of stress hormone, lowered addiction to tobacco and better memory and perception. Imagine the other effects practicing meditation can have on you.
