To Make Your Own Wallpaper Books

by Bonnie Chang

Making a wallpaper book is a simple project using any extra wallpaper samples. Designers and manufacturers use the books as a way of showing customers the different styles and designs available. Even a store that specializes in wallpaper cannot carry every available design. The store owners normally find the hottest designs and display those designs in the showroom. The store then usually takes smaller pieces of other styles and places those inside a book. Customers can flip through the book and look for designs not available on-site. In case the customer finds something he prefers, the store orders it from the supplier.

Getting a wallpaper sample book necessitates glue or wallpaper paste, wallpaper samples, scissors, a ruler plus a journal or sketchbook. One of the most effective ways to make the book is with an existing hardback book. Because the hardback book is already bound, the crafter doesn't have to worry about the book falling apart eventually. The crafter has to cut the wallpaper samples into smaller pieces precisely the same size and shape as the pages in the book, if not slightly smaller. The ruler makes sure that the edges of the wallpaper stay straight and doesn't curve or look uneven. After applying glue or wallpaper paste to the back of the wallpaper sample, the crafter presses it against the page and lets the glue dry.

The same project requires making use of smaller sheets of wallpaper, commonly around two inches by two inches. Each page in the book can hold multiple designs, which is great for those that collect vintage wallpaper or samples. A small amount of glue applied to the back of the wallpaper is strong enough to hold it onto the book page. The ultimate way to keep the pages from looking sloppy as well as messy should be to lay out the design on a piece of paper a similar size and shape as the book page first. Putting a ruler flat against the page can help too because it keeps each and every piece even and level on the page.

Another way to create a wallpaper book is by covering a notebook with sheets of wallpaper. Open the book down the middle as well as set on a sheet of wallpaper. Trace within the edges, leaving a two inch border between the paper and the notebook. Remove the notebook and use a thick coat of glue to the front and back covers of the notebook. Wrap the wallpaper around the cover as well as press down. The crafter smoothes down the wallpaper to prevent air bubbles and give the surface a smooth look. Apply more glue to the inside edges of the notebook as well as wrap the wallpaper over. If the glue dries, it holds the wallpaper constantly in place.
