Running Tips - Are You Ready For A Road Race?
Running a road race is a great way to test yourself as a runner to see what kind of shape you're in. However, there are other reasons to run a road race. Here are a few other reasons.
1. You get a cool race t-shirt. Yes, I'm a geek, this is the reason I first started racing. I loved getting the t-shirts from all the different races. It just makes you feel to walk around wearing a shirt from a race.
2. You want to test yourself. You've been running for some time and you want to see just how good shape you're in - and compete with others. Even if you don't want to compete with others, it's good to do races to see if your time improves from one race to the next at a certain distance.
3. Motivation to run. Having a race coming up is great motivation for getting out the door. If you know you have a race coming up in few weeks or so, you definitely want to get out the door to get that run in. It helps to keep excuses from creeping in!
4. Having an upcoming race adds some structure to your running. When you are training for a race, you need to have a schedule for how far you are running on each day. You'll know what to do on each day. Sometimes runners have problems with how far they should run each day. When you have a training schedule (which you should have if you are training for a race), you'll know what you need to run each day.
5. Meet other runners. Races are a great way to meet runners from other areas. I've met some great people that I only see at out of town races. It's also fun to schedule an out of town race - even if it's only an hour away. You can carpool with some runners from your area. It's great fun and you definitely build a camaraderie with those runners.
6. Support a charity. Many people run races to raise money for charities that are near to them. And, what a win-win situation it is. You run a race to stay (or get) in shape and you are raising money for a cause that need it.
Road racing is a lot of run - even if you are not a fast runner. I hope these reasons help you to decide and get out there for a race soon!
