What Upholstery Is Right For You?

In the showroom all sofa sets look wonderful. They're bright, shiny, and new. However, is it really practical for you to have a leather recliner chair in your home? Do you really want a white sofa set? Use your judgment for things like this.

Your inner monologue when buying new furniture for your home should be something of a checklist. Is it affordable? Is it practical? Do I like it? Do I love it? Will it fit in with the décor of my current home? How will anyone else sharing this apartment or home with me react to this new piece of furniture?

It does not necessarily have to be in that order but these are things you should think about. If you are still having trouble, here are some examples. If you are living in a home where all of your furniture is one color or one pattern pick a complimentary color or pattern. You don't want to have a lovely blue and white plaid sofa set and then buy a bright orange and green striped couch. It won't look right in your home.

You also need to consider the type of fabric that is upholstering your new love seat or recliner. If you have new kittens in your house, it's probably not a good idea to buy a leather covered sofa. Children, dogs or puppies, and people apt to spill things are also reasons not to buy a fancy leather sofa. White is generally always a bad idea because it's so quick to get dirty and so easy to spill things on. If you're a spiller, make sure you can flip the cushions on the couch so that you can't see any stains you're likely to get on the couch. Likewise, get a pattern or color that will make it difficult to see if you do spill.

Keep in mind that while the sun will discolor cloth upholstery after long exposure it will actually break down and destroy leather upholstery. So if you're planning on putting the new sofa set near a window or other sunny spot, it's best to go for some kind of cloth upholstery instead.

So, while furniture shopping you should keep this small checklist in the back of your mind. It is not enough to love a furniture piece, it has got to be practical for your wallet and for your home as well.
