Wind Turbine Technician: Who Would Like This Job?

by Roger Brown

With all the wind turbines and wind farms out there dotting the landscape now, the position of wind turbine technician is increasingly in demand. While just a few years ago there was little to no need for these jobs, things have radically changed in the past few years. The worldwide decline in fuel reserves is the main reason for the rise in need for wind turbine technicians. This is unlikely to change anytime soon.

The type of person who would like this job has the following characteristics...

Love of big money - Wind turbine technicians started out making well over $50,000 year. This is not because the technical skill required to do the job was that great, but rather it is because of the demand in the market right now. There are not that many people who can do this job at the moment. This is a great position to be in - a tremendous need in the market and not many people to fill it.

Love of the outdoors - It goes without saying that wind turbine technician positions require that you work outside. The wind turbines are all exposed to nature and therefore to be able work on them you may have to do your work while wind turbine is spinning.

No fear of heights - While there are no universal height restrictions other than the FAA's 200 feet, there is no doubt that as a wind turbine technician, you will be working high up. That is because the higher up the turbine is located, the more energy it can bring in. Most wind turbine kits are located on towers which are at least 80-100 feet in the air. That is another reason this position plays so well.

Like staying on top of new technologies - As these are markets emerge, there are more and more new areas of technology that will be exploited. That is to say, as we get more and more of these out in the field we get a chance to learn and therefore improve upon past knowledge. Therefore, if you are looking for a wind turbine technician position you had better be of the mindset that the information base is constantly changing and that you need to be a constant and perpetual learner to make the most out of this career.

Concluding - wind turbine technician positions are the career of the future if you like to make big money and don't mind getting your hands dirty.
