How to succeed in college
How to succeed in college As every process learning at collage should be thoroughly planned by college students in accordance with their needs and philological peculiarities. It is a known fact that every student has own “inner program” of life, and it is up to him/her to decide which way to choose. For instance, such outstanding persons as Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates, Dell Computer Corporation founder Michael Dell, authors F. S. Fitzgerald and William Faulkner (Welcome to the COLLEGE DROPOUTS, 1996) were not among the best students at college and had been dropped out. Nevertheless, this did not prevent them to succeed. In reality, if a person (student) wants to succeed he/she needs to organize his life time accordingly with the changing environment. Today, "there is a high school dropout crisis far beyond the imagination of most Americans, concentrated in urban schools and relegating many thousands of minority children to a life of failure” (Dropout in America, 2004). The paper discuss such ways as time management and skills development which are aimed to avoid drop out and help to succeed at college. Time management: The first, and the most important aspect of this process is time management. A student must plan his day not to waste precious time. It does not mean that he/she needs to study from morning till night. Time management means that a student needs time for learning and self –improvement, for fun and relaxing. In general, time management is one of the ways that some people use to cope with their problem such as indecision and haste. Planning their day a student may follow the main steps of the process. On the first stage he/she needs to answer the question: “What is the main task(s) for tommorow?”. It can be a test, a research paper, etc. How much will I needs to cope it? A student should use his time table to mark free hours which he/she spends in campus or outside. The nest step is hour per hour planning including a library, a recourse center etc. it is important to leave time for self-learning, which is usually avoided by many students. This is a very challenging field of study which helps every student to develop skills and knowledge which cannot included into the collage program. The example of planning may be as follows: 7:00 –8:00 review home assignment for today 8:00 – 14:00 classes 14:00 –16:00 (break) read pp.89=101 for biology research paper. 16:00 –18:00 library. Prepare assignment for chemistry, and physics. 18:00-20:00 meeting with friends at gym 20:00-21:00 self-learning (to read additional information for my biology class, etc). It should be noted that rest and relaxing are important for every student. Without it the effectiveness of the learning process will be reduced. Study skills: High degree of sophistication, a matchless charm, and educational quality is backed by centuries of educational tradition. For many students good study skills is considered as “the ladder of opportunity”, nevertheless success in learning depends upon personal qualities and intelligence of students. In general, the level of scholarship and erudition is closely connected with the desire of student to learn and reflects and reinforces existing differences between types of students. The better study skills you develop the easier learning process will be for you. Study skills mean a personal style of learning. It is known that individuals learn for themselves and learn from other people. They learn as members of a group and by interaction with their group-mates, teachers and people outside the educational establishment. But for effec¬tive learning to take place at the individual level it is essential to foster an environ¬ment where individuals are encouraged to take risks and experiment, where mistakes are tolerated, but where means exist for those involved to learn from their experi¬ences. Library is the best place for learning proposing good resources and comfortable atmosphere for every student. Other places such as coffee shops and open area are also can be used, but the main nuisance is that these places are always full of people and friends which prevent many students to concentrate. The presence or absence of motivation is concerned with the factors that influence student to behave in certain ways. Some student is able to motivate themselves, but another group of students needs external motivation to achieve educational goals. It means that they cannot choose the right method to study. There are different types of perception: visual, auditory, or kinesthetic. For some students illustrations are the best way to comprehend, because their visual perception is better than ear. Kinesthetic type of students grasps information based on movements. For auditory type, listening helps to study faster and more effectively. It means that every person should find the most appropriate way to learn in accordance with personal needs and psychological peculiarities. Utilizing school resources. Most teachers suppose that effective teaching requires positive, involved students. In other words, when students want to learn, they will learn. Buit there are some cases, when students need help, and school resources is the only opportunity for them to solve the problems. In general it means participation in health care programs and financial projects which are aimed to support students. For instance, psychological counseling can help to avoid depression and stress during the first year of education, because for some it is very difficult to learn a new way of studying. Job placement is aimed to help student to find job which will not affect their education. According to state of health it is possible to singled out a group of student with physical and mental disabilities. These student especially need additional services to “survive”. In case, a student can identify his/her needs (or address a special service to helps him), he will be able to succeed in college. For instance, in 1999, Kathy Montiero, the mother of an African-American student, filed an action against racial discrimination caused by the literary works studied at the college” (Racial Discrimination, 2005). If they failed to address a court and college authorities, the students could be low-motivated and not encouraged to contribute to class discussions by voicing their opinions and supporting their answers. It illustrate that a student should ask for help if he/she really needs it to develop his skills and abilities to study. It is possible to conclude that all aspects of successful study is closely connected with tame management, study skills and personal motivation. This process cannot be provided by teachers only, because much depends upon students self organization and efficient planning of the working day. Nevertheless, if you have a high intelligence, you will be able to management your life time table.
