Speed Cleaning
by Stephen Nickse
Who wants to spend all of their valuable time cleaning? Unfortunately, having your home in disarray wastes valuable time as well. If you are one of the many people wanting to spend minimal time cleaning but still live in a clean, organized home, you can benefit from speeding up the everyday maintenance that clean homes tend to demand. To give your home a cleaning overhaul in a concentrated period of time, put a load of laundry in the washer first so it has time to finish while you take care of other housework. Before you start putting away clean dishes, scan the house for stray dishes, and fill the sink with water so that any used dishes can soak while you unload, minimizing or eliminating the need to scrub before reloading the dishwasher. Group items together which belong in the same areas of the kitchen when loading the dishwasher to expedite the time it takes to unload them later. When cleaning surfaces such as tables and countertops, spray your cleaner of choice over all surfaces at the same time, and proceed to wipe them all down at once. In the kitchen, cleaning all counters, stovetop and tables in the same step saves time as compared to spraying and wiping each surface individually. For a quick bathroom facelift, spray and clean all surfaces as a group, following the same time saving approach as advised for the kitchen. Clean mirrors and glass surfaces last to prevent splashes that may occur as you clean other surfaces.Vacuum all carpeted rooms in the same step, beginning from the back of each room and working your way out. You may also consider using an appropriate length extension cord to give you the time saving ability to vacuum the entire house without unplugging and relocating. A good way to streamline your routine and spend less time cleaning is to incorporate good cleaning habits into everyday life. Take out the trash when you are leaving to go to work or the supermarket, and combine the trash from all of the cans in the house before you do. When you are leaving a room, take with you something that does not belong and put it away, or grab a handful of items which belong in the same room for more efficiency. Even if you do not have much time to clean, make it count. Fitting in even twenty minutes of speed cleaning can make a significant difference when you use your time wisely. Making real progress in a short time period involves committing to focused and quick cleaning, with a given time constraint if necessary. Distractions can turn what should be a ten minute task into a thirty minute one, so effective speed cleaning entails accomplishing as much as possible without wasting any time, so that you can go back spending time doing what you love.
