Curing Stomach Cancer: What Do They Mean?

Stomach Cancer

A number of different cancers can develop in the stomach, the most common subgroup of which is adenocarcinoma. This cancer of the digestive tract, occurring most often in men over the age of 40 in countries outside of the United States. Like any cancer diagnosis, the first question out of the mouth of a patient is likely to relate to curing stomach cancer. What are the treatment options for the average patient?

One of the biggest problems of stomach cancer is that it either produces no symptoms or it produces symptoms that disguise themselves as other, common stomach problems.

It should not come as a surprise to anyone involved in the cancer industry that the typical triangle of treatment applies to stomach cancer: surgery, chemotherapy and radiation…also known as slash, poison and burn.

A gastrectomy, which is the surgical removal of the stomach, is considered to be the only curative treatment. So, with the diagnosis of stomach cancer, removal of the stomach is considered the only cure.

Despite that, just to be sure, a stomach cancer patient is likely to be introduced to chemotherapy and radiation in an attempt to move towards curing stomach cancer.

Chemotherapy has its roots in the mustard gas chemical warfare of the first two world wars. Designed as an agent to kill human cells, it does exactly that. Because it is most dangerous against replicating cells, and cancer cells replicate wildly, the doctors are betting on the fact that it will kill the cancer cells before it kills the healthy cells and, thus, the patient.

However, even when chemotherapy is successful in shrinking tumor cells or eradicating existing symptoms of cancer: it still opens the patient up to infection and disease because it destroys the immune system, which is another set of rapidly replicating cells.

Radiation therapy is, simplistically put, a highly focused weapon aimed at the cancerous zone with the same intent as chemotherapy: destroy the cancerous cells before they destroy the healthy cells and kill the patient. Also like chemotherapy, radiation therapy has an extremely damaging effect on the immune system as a whole.

Both treatments also happen to be carcinogenic. Two of the three most common treatments for cancer actually cause more cancer. These are the things the medical industry would rather you didn’t know when it talks about curing stomach cancer, or any kind of cancer.
