How to Start a Lasting Tradition for Baby's First Christmas

by Stephanie Gallagher

Baby's first Christmas is a great time to start a new tradition. Here's an easy way to create lasting memories.

Steps:

1. Get a keepsake box (like one for saving mementos or baby items), a large manilla envelope or decorative container.

2. Find some holiday-themed stationery.

3. Write a letter to your baby in the style of a Christmas letter, but instead of describing your activities and accomplishments for the year, focus on the baby. For example, talk about the day baby was born, what kinds of things you did for his first outings, what his favorite toys or books are, where you traveled, what kind of milestones he reached this year, etc.

Go month by month, the way a typical Christmas letter does, or do it free form.

If the baby was just born in the later part of the year, describe your anticipation and preparation leading up to the big event.

4. Save the letter in your keepsake box, manilla envelope or decorative container.

5. Write a letter just like this one, every year to your child. Then give it to her when she turns 18. It'll be a lasting chronicle of her life, something you'll both enjoy reading again and again.

Tips:

Don't tell your child you're writing these letters. The surprise will make it much more special.

You don't have to wait until he's 18 to give him the letters. Do it when he first learns how to read, when she goes to middle school or graduates from college.

If you use a keepsake box, include a special outfit from her first Christmas too. Who knows? Maybe she'll give it to her baby when she has one.
