How To Sing Like A Pro

by Pamelina Siow

To properly sing, you will need to learn about the techniques of breathing correctly, pitch control and volume modulation. Professionals sing with their diaphragm and stomach in the correct shape and every singing aspirant must learn to do this, too.

They should also observe proper positioning of the tongue as well as the right posture. With these tips, learning singing will be much easier. Know how to sing like a professional performer with these singing tips.

Volume Control

Controlling the volume of voice in crescendo and diminuendo is one of the important aspects of powerful singing. Voice control goes beyond mere pitch. Controlling the volume and the force of the voice is important in adding expressions to performances. Beginners often make the mistake of shouting high notes and consequently irritate their listeners.

Another problem encountered by novice singers when controlling their voice's volume is the production of glottal sound at the rear side of the throat. Some have difficulty returning to soft voice after singing loud, whereas those who are fixated to soft singing may have problems with controlling mid-range notes.

An effective technique for teaching novices how to sing properly in crescendo and diminuendo is to use a four-syllable phrase. The last notes for each syllable should contain 4 beats, which the students must sing in crescendo and diminuendo. The voice should be concentrated at the front of the mouth instead of the throat. The glottal sound is prevented this way.

Soft Palate Technique

The soft palate technique is a method of singing which involves manipulation of throat muscles. To get the best quality from your singing, make sure that your throat is wide open during the entire song. The sound coming from the voice box will be at its best when the throat's cavern is as widely open as it could be. Singers must learn how to work on their soft palate muscle and raise it higher when singing vowels.

This may take an extensive practice especially for singers who are not sure where their soft palate is. The soft palate lies next to the hard palate which consists of hard ridges and boney arch on the roof of the mouth. The soft palate extends so far back the mouth that your thumb cannot reach the end of it. The soft palate technique improves vocal resonance.

You would notice that your tone would sound more rounded when using this vocal technique. One way of doing this technique is imagining an apple suspended at the back of your mouth as if there is a tall pillar between the roof and lower surface of your mouth.

Crossing the Middle Range

Singing from high to low scales could result to breathy or croaky performance as the middle range of notes is reached. This could be prevented by improving voice control. It is wrong to assign different voice exercises for head voice and chest voice. The head voice is used for high notes, while the chest voice is for low notes.

To improve voice quality in middle notes, it is best to have similar vocal exercises for these two types of voices. Vocal exercise should try to develop forward placement of your voice, correct your mouth and throat movements and help you transition between extreme notes, middle scale notes and regular notes. A vocal exercise that involves singing vowel sounds without a break is also helpful.

Professional singing lessons will, without a doubt, give you a much needed boost in your singing career.
