Why Redundancy Is a Good Thing
Thank you for firing me!
Losing your job is something that strikes fear into the heart of many people. You feel deflated, depressed and even worthless sometimes to be told that you are not right for this job any more, or you aren't very good at this or you are surplus to requirements. These sorts of feelings are understandable, but they are going to be felt by more and more people as job cuts increasingly happen across the UK and around the world.

Redundancy is not always a bad thing though. Aside from the obvious money worries, for some people it can be the best thing that ever happened to them.

Self Employed

One avenue redundancy opens up is the option to become self-employed. Having worked in a particular field you will have picked up a great deal of knowledge and skills for your role. What you can do is take these skills and market yourself as a freelance version of what you have just stopped doing for a company. This means that you will have much more control over your day-to-day activities, you will have a limitless monthly income and you get to have your own business card!

Becoming self-employed can be a daunting prospect for some though as it can be seen as a bit complicated, especially when you start thinking about tax. But there is a great deal of help to be found through government and employment agencies that can help you with all this and even offer you a business loan to get you started that should help convince you that you can do it.

New Horizons

Losing you job can feel bad but it can also make you look up from what you were doing with your life and give you a chance to re-evaluate where you are going. It is easy to beaver away at a job for years and forget to look around for what else is available for you. Redundancy gives you this opportunity whether you are ready for it or not and can help you move on to something that may well be bigger and better.

Retire Early

Redundancy can give you the opportunity to retire early, especially if you are given a redundancy pay package. Many people in their late fifties early sixties may be a little anxious about impending retirement, but being forced or maybe ushered into unemployment may be the push needed to take early retirement.

In the event of redundancy coming your way always ensure that your employer has gone through the correct redundancy procedure whether you're looking at early retirement or getting started on a career change CV.

If you find yourself redundant any time soon, always try to look on the bright side.
