Billiards New York

A Game for Kings and Peasants Alike: Billiard Games Are Played by All

Did you know that the first game of pool or billiards looked nothing like the pool game we know today? It began in the 15th century as mostly a croquet game, played on the lawn in France. The game was moved indoors to a wooden table, with green felt perhaps simulate grass, and balls were shoved rather than pushed (with wooden sticks called maces). Did you know the term "billard," mostly came from the French word,"billiart," or "bille," for ball. This may be why how the billiard games, that are now played in New York, got their name. These pool games, were long played and enjoyed by the French. However, the English were aware of billiards (long before New York residents played). William Shakespeare even mentioned the billiards games in one of his plays.

English Discover How Fun Billiard Games Can Be

By the time the English began playing pool games, people were already aware of the French game known as a billiards games and they started adding their own variations. Some complained it was hard to use the mace during play and actually used the end of the stick to hit the ball instead. This may be why in pool games today, the stick is called the cue.

While pool games played kept these changes, players developed a standard set of rules. The modern idea of pool was born, and various pool games became common. Participants in these billiards games started shooting shots off the edges of the tables. What people, (who play pool games in New York or elsewhere), may not know that "pool" was actually used to pass the time in between horse races. Today, people register on pool leagues and have pool tables in their home for guests to play.
