2. ON RESPONSIBILITY
Coach Mike Jay, in his new book, 'CPR for the Soul,' quotes The Dalai Lama's message about Universal Responsibility. 'I believe that to meet the challenges of our times, human beings will have to develop a greater sense of universal responsibility. Each of us must learn to work not just for oneself, one's own family or nation, but for the benefit of all humankind. Universal responsibility is the key to human survival and world peace.' And so we can begin by accepting personal responsibility for ourselves, the first step to becoming accountable. Mike reminds us that in the recent US corporate scandals, we find accountability, but little responsibility.
The Coach suggests . . . that you read CPR (Creating Personal Resilience) for the Soul if you are looking for a way to design your life (personally and professionally) and include your soul! http://www.cprforthesoul.net/
3. ON CLOSING A SPEECH
Most professional speakers will end a speech with some call to action from their audience. Here are few great and memorable closers from US leaders.
'Ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country.' -John F. Kennedy
'Free at last, free at last, thank God Almighty, we are free at last.' --Martin Luther King, Jr.
'Only if you have been in the deepest valley can you ever know how magnificent it is to be on the highest mountain.' --Richard Nixon, 'Au Revoir' speech
The Coach sez . . . Nothing is learned until it is used. What do you want people to do at the end of your speech?
4. ON DELIGHTING THE CUSTOMER
How many times do you under promise and then over deliver? When professional speakers provide added value to their programs they make the program chair a 'hero.' They have not only delighted and served their audience well, but also the person who hired them to speak. We can learn from DisneyLand's example. They post over-stated signs telling you how long you will have to wait from each point. When I get to the ride in less time, I am delighted!
The Coach recommends . . . a new religion, Customer Service. Your thoughts?
5. ON BUSY AND HECTIC
On a daily basis, are you being productive or being hectic? Coach Steve Strauss makes the distinction for us. 'Having a full and productive schedule can be fun. At the end of the day you can feel a real sense of accomplishment. Busy and hectic is largely reactive, no objective for the day, no prioritizing of your actions.' So we become part of the effect of our day rather than being the cause of our day. I know when I am busy and hectic, I feel drained. Here's the formula: Successful day=clear awareness of chosen accomplishment(s)= what the accomplishments will do for me.
The Coach asks . . . 'What do you want to accomplish tomorrow and what will that do for you?'
