It's Official - You Can Survive When Disaster Strikes
Disasters strike in the most unpredicted ways. They arrive without warning, leave the victims devastated and live in tatters. There is no recourse|second choice, just total ruination.
Whether it is acts of terrorism, divorce, fires, death, or illness, the pain that is caused has a central factor. It hurts!! So how do we actually deal with so much grief ?
First you are overwhelmed by the mind-numbing state of shock and total disbelief, where the facts don’t really register. This is how the body’s way of coping. If the reality were to hit home immediately, no one would survive!
Then starts the roller coaster ride of a (((volatile mix of disbelief, anger, guilt and a whole variety of emotions that has your world r eeling like a runaway jet.
This is where you need to take time off to lick your wounds and {{let|allow}}} a small glimmer of the healing procedure to start. For believe it or not, over time you will heal. The reality is you have no choice but to keep on going. Wherever life exists there is hope. Yes you may have lost a loved one, or good friends, or an entire way of life, but you are still alive. Your heart is still pumping and your body demands you feed it, shower and yes, even sleep.
Time and again disasters have proven to be times of opportunity. Opportunity that brings out the community spirit, as has been seen in response to the catastrophic bush fires that ravaged the southern part of Australia. Opportunities for the humblest individual in the community to become a hero. Opportunities for people to extend a helping hand to others they have never known . Opportunities to reveal a true feeling of empathy towards the victims. Opportunities to let others reach out to you. Helping others is often the best and most healing road you can choose, even if it is merely in the role of offering a comforting shoulder for someone to weep on.
Often in times of disasters, you come face to face with your fears, in a three D effect . The "What ifs..?" that scare you stupid in the still small hours of the morning, when life is as its lowest ebb.
Disasters face you also with the reality that life is unpredictable and more often than not you are forced to deal with the unforseen . Disasters turn you into refugees. People who must create another way of life. People who know what it is to have nothing. No matter how bad you feel , you simply can't roll over and quit when disaster strikes. Sitting having a pity party is not a choice . Feeling sorry for yourself hurts no one but you . It is in times of disasters that you are forced to search deep inside yourself to find strengths you never imagined you even had.
The key to survival through a disaster, is that you have to become a realist and an optimist at the same time, as life-stopping circumstances change you forever. You have become a different person.
Through disaster , your life becomes clearly divided, with before and after the event. You will never look at even the simplest things of life in the same way. {{{Yet, |For}} the finish of one thing is always the start of something else. It has been proven over and again that human nature will rise once more , just as from the ashes the phantom phoenix will rise afresh .
How do you live through disasters? You look back and learn the lessons from yesterday , but more importantly you look forward and take one small step at a time. The tallest peaks on earth were conquered one small step at a time. You can do it too. You can take that next small step, no matter how painful. Let the future and the big things take care of themselves. Just decide to survive today.
