The Importance of Names to Promotional Pens and Custom Printed Bags

by Mark Etinger

Names are very important. They are the way we call ourselves. The sounds we use mean certain things to us and we associate subtle meanings with words, meanings centuries, even millennia old. English, luckily has had a panoply of influences, from French to German to Spanish and on. These influences are especially important when it comes to the names of a business. First names and last names are one thing - last names tell us the clanship of an individual, while the first allows us to associate Biblical, religious or other traditions with that person. But the process of naming becomes more difficult when we want to represent a product or idea.

In this case we have to do a different kind of research. If we are selling a pill, for example, it sounds pharmaceutical to add an "ex" somewhere in there, or maybe even a "tor." Torex sounds like it could be an appetite increasing drug, perhaps. Similarly if you are marketing a very specific product, such as a boat bumper, it would make sense to have some kind of nautical or water allusion to the name, such as Hydro Bumpers.

Then you can begin to think about what will appeal to people. Words like "United" or "Columbia" refer to our proud nation, and evoke a subliminal patriotism, encouraging patronage. Yet usually companies with these names sell a specific product or service - their names makes them sound like they are representative of a nation, even if they are the neighborhood hardware store.

And finally you can begin to think about the cleverness or wit of a name, and what that evokes. Associations with words like "Target" or "Whole Foods" are more immediate and less abstract than a supplier of a specific service. These symbolic names suggest a specific meaning, in these cases, that of quality, although these stores sell a variety of things.

After you feel comfortable with a name for your company it's time to seek out promotional merchandise. The name has to look good on custom printed bags, promotional pens, imprinted coffee cups, promotional water bottles or any other kind of object you would consider giving out. There are many different options when it comes to what you want to put your company's name on. After you've chosen a good name for your company, choosing which promotional merchandise you want is easy!
