Moving out of your parents' home may be a highlight of your life. You can finally feel independent, like an adult, without your parents' watching your every move. But, first time movers quickly learn how incredibly stressful and unnerving moving out can be. Many major cities have a quick turnaround and the moving process has to be done quickly. Some individuals luck out and find the perfect apartment after a few days; other people spend the entire month looking and find an apartment just days before the move-in date. As you start to pack, you cannot fathom how you managed to store so much stuff into your bedroom. The boxes keep piling up and you wonder how you're going to fit it all. First apartments tend to lack ample room for everything you own, especially if you are rooming with other people. You have to factor in that you will accrue more items the longer you stay there. You also need to consider that friend or relative will pawn off his old furniture to you, which is both good and bad: you will not have to spend money buying new furniture, but you will also most likely end up with too much furniture for too little space. Renting a storage unit will leave your new apartment uncluttered; it will provide a space for extra pieces of furniture that have no home in your new home. Storage units can also serve as a shelter for seasonal clothing and décor. Closet space, especially if you live in New York, is practically non-existent and there is only so much you can fit underneath your bed. There is no use flooding the apartment with items you do not plan on using for half the year. Storage units come in various sizes, so you do not have to worry about overpaying for a huge unit that you will barely fill. Your roommates are probably facing the same uneven belongings: space ratio. Why not split the cost of a unit? Divide the space up equally so everyone receives a fair share. Labeling the boxes is always important, but if you are sharing it with other people, you cannot afford not to label. But, do not just label a box "dishes"; instead, write "Joe's dishes" to distinguish your set from everyone else's. When it comes time to take anything out of the storage unit, the process will be a much easier one with proper organization. Do not fear that you have way too many items before the initial move. Weed through, purge, and then rent a storage unit.
