The Undeniable Attraction of Rare Earth Magnets
Magnets are products that most people give no second thought to. They’re often thought of to be clinging to the surface of fridges, holding up your children’s artwork or shopping lists. Teachers use them on whiteboards at school to hang up teaching aids or perhaps small signs or magnetic decals are placed on vehicles sometimes, but these attractive products have a much more ubiquitous role in your daily life than you might realize. They have a lot more practical and entertainment potential as well. This is especially true for very powerful rare earth magnets. Click here if you’re interested in learning more.
The Power of Rare Earth Materials
Rare earth magnets are the strongest magnetic products available. Whereas common items are frequently made of a ferrous (iron-based) material, rare earth products are made of either neodymium or samarium-cobalt. Neodymium is an element that was utilized in the 1980s in order to create cheap permanent magnets for industrial and commercial purposes. The phrase rare-earth is slightly misleading as these materials are not particularly rare or expensive. This phrase does, however, express the uncommon power of these particular magnets. These small rare earth products can be up to three times as powerful as common ferrite or ceramic magnets.
A Multitude of Uses
You already have bits of neodymium in many of the everyday electronics that you use. This element is found in speakers, earphones, and musical instrument pickups. It’s also a common part of computer hard drives and cell phones. There are over two pounds of it in many electric motors found in hybrid cars. These powerful magnets have a slew of other useful applications as well. They are frequently used for organizing tools or kitchen utensils, making non-piercing body jewelry, in magic tricks, as clasps for clothing or cabinet doors among other uses. There are some uniquely creative ways to utilize neodymium magnets as well. If a brass instrument is dented, it is possible to remove those dents by putting an appropriately-shaped magnet on the inside of it and then pulling it back and forth from the outside with another one. This will work the dent out and leave it looking great. Using a similar technique, it’s easy to clean the exterior of upper-level windows without having to dangerously lean out of them or wrestle a ladder to the side of your house. A magnet in a rag on the outside can be manipulated from within by another magnet. This can be reversed to clean the inside of aquariums or fish tanks as well.
Safety and Health
Rare earth magnets are perfectly safe and are used for many industrial and commercial processes, including food processing. In fact, many people claim that magnetism has therapeutic benefits when used in certain ways. The only concern you should have with these magnets is getting body parts pinched between them and a metal surface or another magnet. Because they are so powerful, large, heavy magnets can cause harm if a finger, arm or leg gets in between them and what they are attracted to.
Practical Fun
Besides having a ton of useful applications, neodymium magnets are simply fun to play with. Whatever your needs, magnets made of rare earth materials are versatile and strong enough to meet them. For more details: CMS Magnetics
