Everything You Need To Know About Python's Feeding Habit
Some pet python owners keep a constant eye on how far their pets have adapted to the artificial environment of the owner's home. Adapting to the environment will reflect on their pets health and longevity by impacting on their eating habits. Let's discuss some important points about why some pythons may refuse to eat.
If you know the main causes, usually there'll be no real need to worry.
In any case ...
1. Before you bring a new python home, make sure you get a feeding DEMO from the person who sells you your pet. Ask for details about what you should be feeding the python and at what frequency your new pet has been fed in the past. (You can only really judge feeding in the context of feeding history).
If your python skips one feeding, there is probably no real problem. But if it refuses to eat for a prolonged period, it could be due to any of the reasons below.
2. It could be because the python is new to the surroundings. Providing an appropriate home and taking care of all its needs should quickly facilitate its adaptation to its new home. So feedings are more frequently missed EARLY in the python's experience with your home.
3. The most frequent reason is that the python is FINE and needs no food; pythons don't feed as frequently as humans or other animals do. Pythons are known to fast for days, weeks, and even months. (They eat much less frequently than cats, dogs, and other mammals we're used to keeping as pets)
4. Or it could be because you are feeding the incorrect food. Changing too quickly from what your python is used to will often seriously disrupt it's feeding routine. Try reverting back to the original routine.
5. Pythons also go into hibernation for long periods of time. Your python will refuse to eat in the winter months when it goes into hibernation, which is normal. As long as your python doesn't exhibit symptoms of weight loss (or other signs of illness ... we'll cover those in more detail in a future message), there is no cause for worry.
6. Lack of visual security could also make your python reluctant to eat. Review the previous message on setting up your python's cage to provide a secure visual environment, and your pet could return to normal eating.
Of course, if none of the above seem like adequate explanations, your pet python might be sick, or becoming old, (in which case it's food requirements may be on the decline).
If it's not very clear to you why your python is not eating (you've tried some of the remedies above to no avail), you may have to seek the advice of a veterinarian.
