Failing to Plan Equals Planning to Fail

by Angela West

So much has been said and talked about the inevitable elements of the construction industry. Various issues that need immediate attention have also been discussed. How important coordination and communication is, has been paid enough heed.

But have we understood the importance of planning yet? Have we taken into account the consequences we might face if prior planning is not done in the construction industry? Well, the topic itself speaks volumes – if you fail to plan, you are planning to fail.

The importance and uses of planning are many, but a few significant ones are highlighted below:

• Project execution

Most of the time businesses fail to execute the construction project on time not because the idea lacked matter or they fell short of resources, but because somewhere their plans starting from the scheduling to the budgeting of the project were improper and not properly checked out.

• Be prepared for contingencies

If you are planning things in your business, it doesn’t indicate that you are being skeptical about your business, it instead shows that you are not waiting for something to turn up out of the blue and hamper the progress of your project. You are planning things in advance so that you can confront the mishaps of any kind. Isn’t that a wise thing to do?

• You have a backup option

Planning means availability of alternatives at your fingertips. You can choose anytime, any option at your convenience. It implies that you will always have a back-up option with you. If plan A fails, you always have a plan B. Move ahead with the alternatives.

• Strategic management

A plan is more of a map, a guide, a direction, a route, most importantly, a strategy. It lays a well-thought-about path in front of you on which your business just needs to walk upon. Your business can manage things in a strategic manner because you are not digging at random; you know exactly where you are going.

All the other project functions therefore fail at the very beginning if you are not paying heed to planning. Better to fasten your safety belt even before you start the engine of your construction project.
