La Cage aux Folles NYC Review

by Al Terry

There is no need to look any further for a La Cage aux Folles NYC review. This is the third time this musical has come to Broadway, and as they say the third time is a charm. The original Broadway production hit the stage back in 1983, had great reviews and ran for 4 years. The musical enjoyed 9 Tony nominations in which it took home 6 including Best Musical. The fun and energetic show came back for a revival a mere six years ago where it ran for 6 months and took home 2 Tony Awards. The current running show's home is at the Longacre Theater where it is scheduled for an open-ended run.

What makes the current La Cage aux Folles NYC review glow is that it has been reworked. The current production comes from London's Menier Chocolate Factory where it has received great success. Although the Broadway cast is completely new to the West End's version with great additions such as Kelsey Grammer and Oliver Award winner Douglas Hodge. The latest production received 11 Tony nominations, winning three including Best Musical Revival, Best Actor in a Musical (Douglas Hodge) and Best Direction of a Musical.

La Cage tells the flamboyant story of Georges and his lover Albin as they run their St. Tropez drag nightclub, "La Cage aux Folles" located along the French Riviera. Albin plays Zaza the clubs star drag queen and Georges is the owner as well as master of ceremonies for his club. The nightclub also has the help of their own chorus line known as "Les Cagelles" who are the backup drag performers behind the great Zaza. The two continue to live in their flamboyant lifestyle until one day Georges' son, Jean-Michel shows up with news of his engagement to the daughter of an ultra-conservative right-wing politician. Jean-Michel's fiance' and her father are now coming to dinner to meet the family and the tensions, adventures and great comedic moment ensue. Based on the original French play of the same name by Jean Poiret "La Cage" shows a strong relationship and marriage become shaken to the core as a family is tested through their son's decision.

The musical's book has been written by Harvey Fierstein with music and lyrics by Jerry Herman. One of the most positive moments of the La Cage aux Folles NYC review is the score which boasts some very memorable tunes such as Albin's Act 1 finale "I Am What I Am" which would go onto to become a pop hit for Gloria Gaynor and one of her biggest songs ever recorded. The song also would go on to be recorded by Tony Bennett, Pia Zadora[], and Shirley Bassey and has become an anthem to the Gay Pride movement. Other songs of note within the musical include "The Best of Times" and "We Are What We Are". The musical's superb choreography is handled by Lynne Page and the show is directed by Terry Johnson, both add a fresh feel to this latest revival.

The La Cage aux Folles NYC review should help decide if this is a musical worth seeing. La Cage is by far one of the best new musical's playing on Broadway and fits right into the colorful landscape of Manhattan. The production is set for an open-ended run but now is your chance to catch the delightful and talented original cast which the critics are raving about. La Cage aux Folles tickets are on sale now through the box office so grab a seat and enjoy the escapade.
