How To Tie A Tie In A Hurry

by Roddy Jones

A neatly tied tie is a must have in any workplace and even some party scenarios. It gives you a professional appearance and most quality suits simply look incomplete without one. There are multiple different ways to tie a tie--all of which using a different knot. This article will be a step by step guide on tying a simple knot for your tie. This simple tutorial will allow you to tie your tie in a hurry so you can have your tie done at the last minute before any event you attend.

NOTE: If you do not own a silk necktie, you are WRONG! You do any quality suit a disservice by pairing it with subpar neckwear. Quality silk neckties make cheap suits better, polyester neckties make great suits look cheap...

Step 1: Prop the collar of your shirt up. This allows you easier access to the neck area and allows the tie to sit underneath the collar more easily once you put it back down.

Step 2: Drape the collar around your neck with the large end of the tie facing in the direction of your dominant hand. Make sure that the larger end of the tie hangs down further than the shorter end. Usually there is a seam on the larger end of the tie. A good rule of thumb is to match the shorter end of the tie parallel to this seam.

Step 3: Take the larger end of the tie and place it underneath the shorter end. You want the inseam from the larger end of the tie to be facing outward at this point.

Step 4: Take the larger end and move it over the smaller end.

Step 5: Move the larger end of the tie up through the loop that you created when you moved the larger end of the tie.

Step 6: You will notice that in doing this you will create two more loops. There will be one loop on the front and one loop on the back. Hold on to the shorter end of the tie with your other hand and loop the larger end of the tie through the front loop.

Step 7: Hold on to the shorter end of the tie firmly and move the knot you just created up to your neck making sure the front end of the tie is longer than the short end.

Step 8: Put your collar back down over the sides of the tie and make sure the top of the knot is parallel to the collar of your shirt. You now have a perfectly tied tie.

Hope this helps. Now get going!
