Top tips on what to look for when buying a pony

by Martin Hall

A good pony is worth his weight in platinum. Here are our own top tips on what to seek when choosing a pony.

Dimensions - One of the most significant factors is that the pony should be the right size for the rider. There's no point buying a pony that is too huge for the rider.

Capacity - One of the most common issues when it comes to choosing a pony is the parents being too aspiring. It's far better to buy something that the child can ride and enjoy quickly with a view to changing the pony as she gets more experience and abilities - don't aim too high too soon.

Riders skill - With children it's even more necessary to be honest about their skill. Safety is a major factor and you'll want to find something you can have confidence in and that your child can handle. Take a seat with an instructor and highlight exactly what the new pony needs to be.

Type - Prioritise specifically what you demand. Do you want an all-rounder pony or specific breed.

Conformation - The old expression "no foot, no horse" is one to bear in mind. Study the feet carefully and check if they in good shape and healthy? Is there a history of laminitis shown by rings on the hooves? With a show pony, you need to look carefully at how it's put together. For those not destined for the show ring, check that there aren't any glaringly noticeable conformation issues.

Attitude - You can normally tell a pony's personality the minute you walk into the stable. Some horses and ponies are naturally bashful, while others are rambunctious. In the, end it comes down to what you are really looking for. Ideally you need to look for one who accepting, curious, willing to learn and trainable. A serene outlook is a must and, of course, the child has to love him.

Value - Buy the absolute very best you can afford. And that's not always the pricing on the advert, which is the sellers opinion of its worth.
