Home Business Review

Before we get started you need to ask yourself if you are really serious about starting you own Home Business. Let me tell you why: There is a lot of hype on the Internet regarding Home Businesses. Most of the hype is focused on the enormous amount of money people are making using various methods. Most of the sites are selling a “system”, and if you purchase their system they lead you to believe that you too will get instant results. Buy into the wrong ones and your throwing money down the drain! You’ll get frustrated, and like so many people you’ll quit.

I am not saying that some of these systems are not a possible solution that could be effective, but how do you know which one to select?

Before you jump on one of the “System” approaches you need to do some planning.

The first step you need to take is to decide what kind of Home Business you want to have. Do you have products or services that you want to sell directly to customers or are you interested in selling products from Vendors, IE: Affiliate Marketing? Write some ideas down and search for them on the Internet, you might be surprised by how much you can learn from what others are doing. The second step is to think about how you are going to market your Home Business. Most of us are not “Marketers”, but there are tools available to assist you with the process. Let me talk about a few:

Pay-Per-Click Advertising:

Google, Yahoo, Microsoft and others offer Pay-Per-Click Advertising. Their methods are similar. I’ll use Google as my example. Once you are signed into Google you want to go to “MyAccount”. There you will find information for opening an “Adwords Account”, that’s where you do your advertising. Follow their directions.

Once you have your account you can start your Ad Campaign. The first step with Google is to set up a campaign. Next you will create an ad (s) within the campaign that are focused on your Home Business. Each ad will have a number of keywords of your choice. You will select the amount that you are willing to pay each time your keyword triggers the ad.

One of the keys to successful PPC advertising is to pay close attention to the ad title and description. Write bad ads and you get poor results. Customers want to know why your product is the solution they are looking for.

Ezine’s and blogs:

Ezine’s and blogs offer you a way to post an article on the Internet. These articles get picked up and displayed on the Internet when users submit a search that contains text that matches the text in your article title. If your article header appears, a link to your article is displayed. This is a great way to advertise your Home Business for free.

Opt-In Programs:

An Opt-In Program is a fee-based program that offers to get you hits on your site. They do this by using email lists that users have joined. When you sign up with an Opt-in Program you provide them with info regarding you products and or services. They use that info to decide whom to send the emails to, and of course there is a link to your site in the email.

Some programs are effective. I tend not to use them because you could get identified as a spammer. If you do you could get barred from using Google, Yahoo etc.

Now you have some basic ideas on how to market. What’s next?

Your customers have to have some way to either get to your Home Business Site or to a vendor that you are an Affiliate for. If you chose to do affiliate marketing you can, at the very lowest level, send you customer directly from your ad to the vendor’s page. This gets you around the issue of having a Website of your own. The down side of this is the shear number of ads that you need to create to market multiple products, which, of course, is exactly what you want to do.

Set up a Website. Getting your own Website and Domain name is a great way to go for your Home Business. This allows you to have one or multiple pages on your Site were you can advertise the products/services that your selling. Example: If you are focusing on selling PC Software, then you could have a page that listed Registry Utilities, a page for Antivirus Utilities, one for Syware/Adware/Malware and so on. The advantage to this approach is that once your customer hits your page they discover other products/services that they might be interested in buying. “Once you get them to your site you want to keep them there for as long as you can”.

There’s a couple of ways to set up a Website:

Sign up with a WebHoster. You’ll get loads of space and tools to manage your site. Most sites will provide you with a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) editor. You would use this editor to create the content for your Website. Other tools are available to purchase. Search the net for either “HTML editor” or “Web authoring”. You’ll also get a Domain name, which is what you will use as the address, or access URL for your Home Business site. Example: If you chose the name “Fred.com” for your Domain name then your URL would be “http://Fred.com“.

Get a Product Solution:

There are solutions available that provide you with a packaged approach to a Website. Normally you would be provided with your own Domain name, software to manage your Home Business site, and, if they are really good, tutorials to help you get up to speed, not only with the site but with effective marketing techniques.

What’s great about this approach is that you don’t have to be a Guru with HTML and Web design. You simply select the text, products and links that you want to appear on you page.
