Proper Care of Cowboy Boots

by Melanie Rivers

When you're investing in any piece of western apparel, you want to know that you are purchasing something of quality that will last a good long time. Given that western wear is meant by nature to be durable, this really is a reasonable expectation. The bootmaker does a quality job on their end and then it's your turn to continue caring for the product! When it comes to many folks' favorite part of cowboy apparel- cowboy boots- the process is really quite simple. If you want to have great looking boots that last for years and years, just follow these simple steps:

1. Keep your cowboy boots clean. Remove dust and dirt from your boots using a damp cloth. After wiping them down, allow them to dry naturally. Never place them over a heat source such as a radiator while drying.

2. Condition your cowboy boots. Let boots dry completely before you apply conditioner. Use an appropriate silicone-free leather conditioner. For exotic leathers such as alligator, lizard, and ostrich, use a reptile leather conditioner. Learn about how to care for exotic leathers such as elephant as you leave the store- most are very similar to other leathers, but there may be specific products that will help ensure a long life.

3. Polish your cowboy boots with a safe color-matched polish. Unfinished boots cannot be polished, but all others can.

4. Protect your cowboy boots from the elements by stain- and water-proofing them. Unfinished boots can be waterproofed using products made specifically for unfinished leather that will not darken or stain the boots.

5. Store your cowboy boots properly, in a dry temperate space. Using boot trees is recommended to help the boots keep their shape. Boots also prefer to have air-flow around them and to be stored standing up.

If you take good care of your cowboy boots now, they will last you for many years. It is a sign of pride to have a pair of boots that are well worn in but also well cared for. Normally, the shaft of the boot will remain in better condition that the foot of the boot, and this is fine. Wear and tear will certainly occur, what you want to do is make sure that the leather remains strong and supple- no cracking or drying out. Be sure to avoid mildewy conditions, as these will ruin a pair of boots quickly! A well made piece of western wear should be something you can enjoy for years to come.
