A lot of misconceptions about this county in the East region of England - when the word 'Essex' is said a lot of people think cockney, white stilettos, boy racer and mini skirts. However, if that is your opinion you would be pleasantly surprised. This county is full of history and culture, and with Colchester being the oldest town in the UK, and Marconi's first radio factory opening in Chelmsford there is so much to learn about this region.
Not only is Essex bursting with history so many beautiful parts of this county are essential for you to go and visit. This is a great place to relax, unwind and revitalize you. This region is mainly rural countryside with small towns, with winding country lanes with the unexpected country pub to have a quiet drink and maybe a bite to eat.
You also have the main towns of Essex, Southend-On-Sea, Billericay, Colchester, Chelmsford, Braintree, Brentwood, Harlow, Romford, and Maldon. These are the busy towns that contain high streets and chain restaurants, and you are never too far from amenities.
Southend-On-Sea is a lively seaside town along with Clacton and Walton-on-the-Naze, so a great place to take the kids for ice cream and fun fare rides! Or if you want to stay away from the hustle and bustle, Frinton-on-sea is a lovely place to take the dog for a walk or just a romantic stroll watching the sun fall.
Walks in Essex Long Walk Clacton to Walton-on-the-naze, 7.1 miles on a charming stretch of seaside. Will take you approximately 2-3 hours, the walk itself is not strenuous at all as its all flat. With the sea breeze in your hair and maybe a cheeky ice cream as a treat, this is really an enjoyable walk. Medium Walk Jury Hill, a relaxed walk through open countryside and farmland, approximately 5 miles in length the average walker could probably complete in roughly 2.5 hours. Childerditch is a small village just a mile from Brentwood, and has an extensive history recording back to 1066. At the end of the walk treat your self to a chilled drink in The Greyhound Pub.
Things to do In Essex Colchester Castle Museum The beautiful grade 1 listed building, started to be built by the Normans in 1069. The grand castle is the largest ever in Britain, and the biggest surviving case in Europe. There is so much to learn from this glorious and intriguing place, make sure you visit if you are in the area.
Tiptree Jam Museum and Tea Room The famous conserves, marmalades and jellies made lovingly by the Wilkin family. They have been farming on their estates in Tiptree for nearly 300 hundred years! They have a divine tea room, open 7 days a week serving home-baked cakes and hot or cold snacks. I think if visiting a jam factory it would be a crime to not to have one of there delicious scones and cream tea.
Kelvedon Hatch Secret Nuclear Bunker An exciting and scary part of history, a large underground bunker which was built in 1952. It was maintained during the cold war, and was supposed to be used for regional government headquarters. It was withdrawn as a bunker in 1992 and is now open to the public, containing a museum mainly about the 'Cold War'. They believe that the bunker has had previous paranormal events, see if you can see the ghost in this 100ft underground bunker!

Promenade Park It is Maldon's most popular park, and it's not just a park. With splash park water play area, large sand pit, and a massive pirate ship to play on the children will be occupied for hours.
