Safety on America's Roads

by Mark Etinger

America's roadways are a public health success story. Road accidents have been decreasing dramatically since the 1970's. Public awareness and law enforcement efforts to ramp up seatbelt and car seat use, deter drunk driving, and limit cell phone use on the road have been fairly successful. As a result there are fewer roadside fatalities now and that number is predicted to keep dropping. Cars have also gotten safer and so has road construction and planning. Back up camera systems for cars have made driving safer and more convenient.

Backup camera system represent an important development in modern driving safety. Although great steps have been made in stopping roadside accidents, head on collisions, and pedestrian hits it is harder to promote safety when pulling out of the driveway. You can be careful but the fact of the matter is there is just no way to tell who or what is behind you a lot of the time. The majority of accidents happen less than a mile from home. Many accidents happen in the driveway, or on the block of residence. Thank goodness these low speed collisions are typically not serious. But they can still be destructive. In the rare incidents when pedestrians are involved injuries can occur.

Less studies are conducted in regards to fender benders, paint scraps, ding, dents and other minor incidents. Anecdotally these often occur when backing out or parking. These are not necessarily dangerous but can simply be costly. Even minor repair to the body, hub caps, wheels or fender can cost hundreds of dollars. The alternative is to drive around with an embarrassing blemish on your car. A vehicle backup camera can help prevent these minor scrapes and dings to your car, which often occur when backing up. It can be hard for even the seasoned driver to determine the distance to the curb or another car when they have almost no visual information. A vehicle backup camera is an extra pair of eyes where you need them most.

These facts ring particularly true for large vehicles like trucks and RVs. People who are not used to driving an RV can benefit immensely from a RV back up camera. Backing up in a vehicle much larger than one you are used to is hard and stressful. RV back up cameras make it easier and safer. The same could be said for trucks. Most of us only rent trucks a few times a year to move or work on a project. Having a truck back up camera ensure we can return those trucks unscathed.
