Wearing Perfume...What's the Worst that Could Happen?

Scent Perils

by Jack Mack

So you like to smell good do you? Well you are not alone...millions of people enjoy the extra special pungent aromas provided by perfume engulfing them in a mist of musky desirability or fruity flowery deliciousness. There are so many wondrous flavours of fragrances for women and men out there that it is hard to escape their appeal. What some people don't realise are the dangers associated with wearing fragrances for women. Here is an attempt to highlight some things you should bear in mind before plunging your head in a bucket of pong.

Allergy

Perfume allergy is more common that some people realise. The first hint that you are allergic to certain chemicals in perfume will be a burning or an itching sensation on the area you have applied it. In the worst case scenario, for people who are very allergic, it is possible to go into anaphylactic shock. Fear not though, as it is possible to work out what exactly you are allergic to and to get perfumes which don't have that chemical. Or you can get perfumes that contain no chemicals as they are made of entirely natural products.

In the Eye

Getting perfume in the eye is not only incredibly painful; it can actually cause serious damage to your eye. The chemicals in perfume include cinnemic alcohol, cinnamaldehyde, eugenol, geraniol and hydroxynitrilase. These chemicals can not only cause serious allergic reactions but when sprayed in the eye can cause serious damage that can lead to sight loss. Luckily this can be avoided by immediately rinsing your eye with water and seeking medical advice quickly.

Scent Memory

The effect scent has on the human brain in incredible. There is direct link between scent and memory which means that any random smell may provoke some old memories which you would not necessarily remember otherwise. This can be a great thing, with the smell of toast conjuring up memories of childhood for many. Unfortunately for some bad memories can also be evoked. Perfumes as worn by old partners are one in particular. It doesn't matter how wonderful that Calvin Klein perfume actually is if it takes your mind back to an unhappy memory then you may not be onto a winner.

Expensive

There is no escaping the fact that perfumes tend to stretch the budget of any beauty regime. Aftershave and perfume are amongst the highest cost consumables by weight. Luckily there are an increasing number of cheap perfumes available in many high street and online perfume stores in the UK. If you really want an expensive one though, make sure you get a good deal or at least that you like the smell (and that you are not allergic.)
