Conspiracy in the Medical Industry: No Need for One

It’s almost too easy to find a website dedicated to providing proof of a vast conspiracy in the medical industry. These conspiracy theories, like so many others, often neatly and logically layout a variety of ways in which the government, the pharmaceutical companies, the medical organizations and the doctors work together to separate you from your money while keeping you sick.
Like most conspiracy theories, these are probably too neat and tidy to reflect reality. Reality is rarely as logical and easily explained as most conspiracy theories would have us believe. However, the fact is that there is no need for such a conspiracy in the medical industry.
An industry that involves so many players, in so many countries and produces so much profit has a nasty habit of becoming a self-sustaining machine. Whereas a conspiracy tends to reflect a small group of people getting together in a back room to make decisions, it’s actually a large group of people looking out for their own welfare and bottom lines.
Ultimately, it is less important whether there is a conspiracy or a nearly unstoppable self-fueling machine behind the problems in the medical industry…the result is the same. Treatments which are beneficial to the patient, but cannot easily be turned into profitable therapies by the medical establishment, are vilified and ignored. Treatments that are toxic and dangerous to the patients, but which generate huge profits are pushed on the public.
The biggest problem is that all of this is inherently human, at least in this day and age. The greatest majority of people is simply looking out for their own best interests. There will always be a certain percentage of people who are actually capable of putting the needs of other people above their own, but it does seem to be a surprisingly small percentage. Society may sleep better at night by believing that politicians, doctors and the CEOs in charge of companies producing our medicine are all the types of people who put the interests of others above their own. Statistically speaking, this is unlikely at best. It’s been proven time and time again that most of the people in charge of most of the things in the world are just doing what they need to do for their own interests. It is for this reason that there is no need for a vast conspiracy in the medical industry.
The biggest problem comes in because even those in the industry who are more interested in the well being of the patient are still dependant upon the people who aren’t. It’s awfully hard to end up being the person in charge if your main interest isn’t building the profits of your business. So, for every doctor who truly wants the best for his or her patient, there is a suit who is only interested in the bottom line of his corporation. Sadly, if the war is fought between the three-piece suit and the lab coat…the three-piece suit wins.
So, while it may be comforting to suck into the belief about some kind of conspiracy in the medical industry, it’s unlikely to be true. The truth is much more likely to be the fact that the medical industry is made up of capitalists doing what capitalists do best: increasing profits and cutting costs. This, of course, is what happens when medicine becomes a business and stops being a right.
