The Power Animals and the Lower World
The lower world is basically where the shamanic power animals can be found. These may be in the form of earth animals, and even those that are only depicted in mythological legends. These animals are also sometimes called 'totems' and they are responsible for guiding shamans through their spiritual journeys as well is through their daily lives. A variety of animals may become your guide; some would even have more than one. These animals are chosen based on your initially defined intentions and goals. Whatever it is that you wish to achieve in life, there definitely is a power animal or animal totem that is waiting for you in the world below.
Traveling into this world in particular has always been considered as a sacred initiation journey for every shaman just starting out on their spiritual pilgrim. In order to get into this realm, a person needs to first attain an altered level of consciousness through deep meditation techniques and detailed visualizations. Entering into this world is often visualized as entering an open hole such as those that can be found between tree roots, on a cave both on land and underwater. Your way of entry depends on your personal preferences; your success within this world will be determined by how accurately you have stated your intentions. Other prerequisites to a successful journey through the lower world include— A mind that is open and free from worry and expectations;A blindfold to help keep you focused on the task;A drumming or rattling music prerecorded on a CD or cassette tape;A quiet place wherein you will not be unintentionally (or intentionally) disturbed by external forces;A clear as day visualization of your preferred entrance—it could be a place you have previously been to, or perhaps an opening in the cloud you have seen once and have gained a sense of peace and relaxation from
Upon entering this particular area of the no ordinary reality, you will be faced with a variety of power animals. When one approaches you, you have to believe and accept that it has been sent to you on purpose, and rejecting it may be disruptive to this very important journey. Spending time with the totem that has been awarded to you may just enlighten on as to why it has been chosen to guide you through your shamanic way of life. Each power animal represents an ability or a virtue that you most need in order to be successful in your endeavors.
One of the most commonly known animal totems is the wolf. This represents a guardian, a teacher who can teach a shaman ways on attaining peace and harmony in his life. Wolves usually travel in pacts, and the wolf totem incorporates this in its teaching—it aims to help you realize the importance of working within a group in order to obtain real freedom, discover new paths and undertake more fulfilling journeys. A wolf also teaches an individual to be self-sufficient while still remaining loyal to the idea of brotherhood. Other totem animals in the lower world include cats, dogs, eagles, elephants, dolphins and just about any other animal you can possible think of.
