Transceiver SFP -Transmitting Beyond Technology

by benmarkers

A transceiver is actually a device which contains a combination of both receiver and a transceiver implemented into a single package sharing a common circuitry. Transceivers find application in cordless sets, cellular phones, radios which are two-way etc. Thus the use of transceiver is mainly in radio technology, Ethernet and telephony.

The transceiver SFP or small form-factor pluggable abbreviated as SFP and also known as Mini-GBIC due to its compact and hot-pluggable nature and functions similar to that of GBIC transceiver. It is used for both data communications and telecommunication applications.  It works by interfacing a network device to a networking cable made of copper or to a fiber optic. It is one of the popular formats which are supported by numerous component vendors. They are specifically designed for supporting Gigabit Ethernet, SONET, Fibre Channel, and many other communications standards. They are used to link elements like routers, switches etc. in a system. SFP transceivers can be of different types operating with different wavelengths for different range of distances.

There are wide varieties are available thus providing the customer with an option to choose among various unique models, which suits the apt needs. They are generally of two types namely multimode SFP and single mode SFP. SFP transceivers find its position in commercial market with a capability to vary data rates even up to 4.25 Gbit/s. An upgraded version namely SFP plus support data rate of up to 10.0 Gbit/s. In general the rate of signal transmission of the modules of transceiver SFP ranges from 100Mbps to 4Gbps. The transceiver work at a distance range varying from 500 meters to 100 kilo meters and the working wavelength for various modules are generally 850nm, 1310nm or sometimes 1550nm. This unique model of transceiver allows an ease to change and maintain when compared with other traditional modules. The users can easily and genuinely replace single module of SFP while the process is running instead of replacing the entire board containing large number of modules in it.

They do find their commercial application in SONET network, point to point mode of networking, gigabit Ethernet, metro access networks, FTTD, routers, switches, bridges, servers. It also finds a great deal of demand in storage area network, local area network, high speed computer links and switching system. They also provide huge range of detachable interfaces to UTP or coaxial cables and multimode or single-mode fibers.
