How to Choose Good Quality Luggage for Your Travels?
Good quality luggage is an indispensible item when traveling, and understanding what you need from your luggage is a beginning. Whether you prefer the best luggage brands or are looking for specific pieces, such as, the best carry on luggage or the best luggage sets, they all boil down to the same basics, wheels, pockets, zippers, hardside vs. softside, and price.
Wheels. Most luggage comes with wheels but the benefits of spinner wheels compared to skate wheels will depend on your travel adventures. Spinner wheels allow you to roll your bag through the airport by your side with little effort. With skate wheels, you pull the bag behind you. If you will be taking your bag along streets, off curbs, or a long distance, you may find skate wheels a better choice. Some bags now come with spinner wheels that work as skate wheels also.
Hardside vs. Softside. Part of your choice for the type of bag you get has to do with what you take with you when you travel. If you take fragile or breakable items, you will be better off with hardside luggage. With the weight limits imposed by airlines many companies have moved to polycarbonate for their hardsides. This offers a lightweight alternative for hardside luggage while retaining protection for breakable items. Softside luggage is more common than hardside and offers a great deal more flexibility. Softside is a good choice if you tend to overstuff your bag, and many bags are now made of puncture proof ballistic nylon.
Pockets. Most bags come with numerous internal and external pockets. These can be a great way to organize your stuff so that you can access it easily. If you already have a packing system, then having numerous pockets may take up valuable space that you could utilize more effectively without the pockets.
Zippers. The best zippers to look for are self-repairing zippers. These zippers will easily repair themselves when zipped open and closed, so you will never be stranded in an airport with a broken zipper and everything coming out of your bag. Most reputable brands now have self-repairing zippers.
Price. How much you should spend partly depends on you. If you travel frequently, you want quality that will last. Briggs and Riley, Delsey or Travel Pro are three great choices. They are built with quality and durability. Briggs and Riley is an industry leader with their "simple as that" warranty. This warranty even covers damage done by airlines.
If you are not a frequent traveler and don't want to spend the extra money for a true high-quality bag, then you would do well with Samsonite or American Tourister. Additionally, Rockland produces bags meant to be fun and they come in sets for affordability, but keep in mind, what is fashionable today may not be tomorrow.
A last note on price, designer bags may be named after a celebrity but the quality of the bag generally does not warrant the price of the bag. Be proactive about researching the quality before you buy a designer bag.
