Why Spray Foam Insulation may Save You from Higher Heating and Cooling Bills

by Emerson Romjue

Should you get the regular foam insulation or the spray on foam insulation? What is the difference and does it really matter? Is one spray foam insulation really any better than the other? It may depend on how fire retardant the insulation is. For example, some of the spray (on) insulation is more fire retardant and said to reduce heat by at least 20 degrees. However, when it first came onto the market, builders were reluctant to switch to this unknown spray foam insulation material.

It doesn't feel like your traditional foam insulation and may take up less storage space initially than the traditional insulation. However, spray foam insulation does seem to have one disadvantage. Once it is sprayed in an attic, it is not movable. It stays. Unlike traditional foam insulation (in which home builders have to wear masks in order to avoid breathing in fibreglass dust), spray-on foam insulation has no issues. It just stays with the house because it cannot be removed.

Does it Insulate any Better?

Some contractors (who use this expanding insulation), say it does do a better job of keeping out rodents (such as: raccoons, mice, rats and other vermin) that may eat the traditional insulation or use it as bedding. However, does this type of insulation really keep a house cooler?

Some building contractors say this expanding foam does a better job insulating because it can expand into areas traditional insulation cannot. This way, it provides better sealing and more consistent control of the temperature, overall. This is why it may lower the inside temperature of a house inside. However, price-wise, it may cost more than the traditional insulation and it cannot be moved once installed.

Messier to Install, but Spray Foam Insulation Doesn't Mind Moisture

Some builders have noted that the foam insulation sprayed on, is messier to install, even if it does a better job of creating an impermeable barrier and allows moisture to breathe through the insulation. Unlike its traditional counterpart, the sprayed on insulation is not bothered by getting too wet. It does not seem to mold as traditional insulation will and is not ruined if it does it wet.

This is why (even if it costs more to install), it may be a better choice all the way around for house projects that need insulation. It only needs adequate time to dry and the understanding that once it sticks, it cannot be taken back up.
