Hydromulching: Watering Tips for a Newly Seeded Lawn

by Graham Brightwell

Watering your freshly hydroseeded lawn is your most important responsibility. So here are some tips that will help speed up seed germination.

There's actually no wrong time to water a new lawn. It's best to water at least twice a day in Spring with temperature not going beyond 70 degrees. When the temperature go beyond 70 degrees, it's advised that you water at least thrice a day.

If you water twice a day, it's best to water at around 11 in the morning and 3 in the afternoon. When you water way earlier than 11 am (like around 7), the lawn would most likely become completely dry by 11. This means, the lawn won't get a supply of water again until evening. That's six long hours under the sun without water. And if you water later than 3 (like around 5pm), the lawn will be too wet and soaked during the night, which is not good when it happens in a regular basis, as the seeds may rot.

If certain parts of the lawn become fuller than other portions, water the thinner portions more often. Doing so will make the entire lawn become uniform eventually.

When the seeds begin to germinate, water for longer periods and less frequently. This will help train the roots to search for water by growing deeper. This will lead to a healthier lawn. For instance, you water for 30 minutes once the lawn begins to germinate. The water must seep down to the ground to almost half an inch. You do not have to water again until after two days. The following day, the roots will be searching for water so they'll grow deeper to "chase" it. If you water the lawn daily, the roots won't have to grow deep to search for water. This means, the roots will not be trained to endure drought, resulting in a weak lawn.

After the lawn has matured, water it deeply but less frequently in order to achieve at least an inch of water in one week. The most ideal time to water a lawn is at sunrise or late in the morning. This is especially important during a hot and humid weather.

Fungus loves dark environments. Watering late at night will make your lawn wet for a longer span of time. If you water early in the morning, you are allowing the water to seep into the the roots and the grass blades will quickly dry under the sun.
