Photoshop is the industry standard for professional graphics editing software developed and sold by Adobe systems. Originally developed for paper based printing in the 90s, today it is extensively used to produce images for the millions of web pages on the Internet. Referred simply as Photoshop by both professionals and lay users, today Photoshop is the market leader in commercial image editing, manipulating software. It was almost 15 years back in 1987 the brothers Thomas and John Knoll started the development of Photoshop. Version 1 was released in 1990 by Adobe. Photoshop version 9 is the latest version as of 2006. In its latest iteration, Photoshop is marketed as CS2 – Creative Suite of Adobe. With the release of Photoshop CS2, it is now fully integrated with Adobe’s new brand image. The classic feature of the eye icon symbolizing Photoshop products have now given way to use of feathers in its new format to identify itself. With so many new avatars, Photoshop still retains its versatility and flexibility. More specialized tools for editing for the web are incorporated in the Adobe Image Ready application. Photoshop continues to have strong links with other applications of Adobe in areas of video editing, animation and authoring to make professional standard DVD with special effects services, backgrounds etc. The brand new Photoshop version now can read various RAW file formats from digital cameras. With so many professional features Photoshop is also facing severe competition from cheaper products. Realizing this, Adobe released the Photoshop Elements – a version shorn of many professional features for just under $100. This however appealed to the general consumer but did not have any takers with professionals as Photoshop Elements is not suitable for pre-press work. While many competing products offer similar products, Photoshop still remains the favorite – the high price not withstanding. Adobe also has smartly collaborated with competition rather than fighting against them. It has added many new web-specific features and digital image processing making it popular with home users and amateurs. With more and more people switching over to digital photography and the proliferation of multimedia rich contents on the web and in the entertainment business, Photoshop is all set to continue its leadership position in true Photoshop tradition and style.
