Danger At Every Turn
Statistically, riding in a vehicle in Irag and Afghanistan can be one of the most dangerous rides on Earth. From IED's to snipers to car accidents to being jolted in the back of a vehicle bouncing on bad roads while wearing body armor. One thing which occurs again and again - Defense Base Act workers are seriously injured while riding in vehicles.
Defense Base Act Vehicle Accidents
To many, if not most, drivers in Iraq and Afghanistan the only thing slowing them down is the road itself and their nerves. Driving recklessly is almost a way of life. Literally. Local drivers, U.S. military drivers, Coalition drivers, and fellow DBA co-workers alike drive recklessly. Time and again DBA workers are seriously injured in vehicle accidents.
We are not talking enemy combatants causing the accidents. We are talking reckless driving. In many parts of Iraq and Afghanistan there is no one to enforce speed limits and traffic laws. Thus, reckless driving becomes the norm. Unfortunately, DBA workers are seriously injured due to careless drivers. Many accidents occur when vehicles are jam packed with workers.
Bone Jarring Roads
The roads in Iraq and Afghanistan range from bad to bone jarring. Literally. One bad jar can cause a lifetime of back pain and disability. Some DBA workers describe it as radical 4 wheeling. Only you are wearing body armor and worrying about the IED's and the like. Now add in vehicles with poor and/or worn out suspensions. Some workers have a daily "commute" from secure military installations to distant work sites. Many DBA workers suffer serious back injuries due to bouncing around the back of vehicles.
IED's
An improvised explosive device (IED), is a roadside bomb. It is a "homemade" bomb constructed and deployed in ways other than in conventional military operations. IED explosions leave craters in their wake. They rip apart vehicles and injure, maim and kill the DBA workers within them. IED's are deadly. By some estimates, IED's have been responsible for over 50% of the DBA deaths in Iraq.
