Cities Rally Against Asbestos for Mesothelioma Awareness Day

The Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation, a non-profit organization also known as MARF, has declared Sept. 26 as Mesothelioma Awareness Day to help shed light on the deadly lung cancer caused by asbestos exposure.

Although asbestos has been successfully banned from the European Union, many household products including children's toys still contain trace evidence of the dangerous carcinogen, asbestos. Because the side effects of asbestos have been documented for well over 100 years, removing asbestos should be of the utmost importance.

The non-profit has been working on making Mesothelioma Awareness Day nationally recognized since 2005. During the month of September, MARF will display a large Mesothelioma banner in Rockefeller Center in New York City in hopes to have a larger impact. A special segment during MSNBC's The Today Show will also air. The show, which reaches an audience of 5.5 million people, will discuss the potentially harmful side effects of asbestos exposure, including mesothelioma, thus limiting the possibility of future cancer cases.

In addition to the banner, MARF is encouraging people to contact local radio stations to promote a mesothelioma radio campaign, highlighting the music of recording artist, Warren Zevon who passed away from mesothelioma in 2003.

Mesothelioma can take upwards of 30 years to manifest, which makes it difficult to pinpoint the initial asbestos exposure. Current mesothelioma patients were exposed to asbestos in the 1960s and 1970s when asbestos was not as regulated as it is now.
