Thoughful gift ideas to impress your lover this Valentines Day

by James Heffield

From a bouquet of red roses to a romantic dinner for two, Valentines Day gifts come in all shapes and sizes. Whether you are a millionaire or a college student there is a gift for every budget. Finding the perfect gift is not about spending the most money, it’s about knowing the object of your affections.A stock standard gift like flowers is a safe bet for the vast majority of people, but if you do give flowers every time February 14 rolls around your partner is likely to notice your lack of imagination.Office worker Isaac Waters, 31, says the bouquet of lilies he gave his old partner every Valentines Day just wouldn‘t cut it when he met Rebecca.“With my last girlfriend giving lilies on Valentines Day became a tradition. They were a symbol of our love and anything else just wouldn’t have been the same. But when I met Rebecca and gave her lilies for three years in a row she was insulted. I guess it goes to show that the gift you choose has to suit the person”If you are set on flowers this Valentines Day, and you haven’t given them as a gift in the previous few years, then red roses, either on their own or in a bouquet, are a good romantic choice.Another standard and generally safe gift to give on Valentines Day is a box of chocolates. Whether you go for the tried and trusted heart shaped chocolates or something more racy like Chocolate body paint, something can be found for the vast majority of lovers.Again however, make sure you keep the person you are buying in mind to avoid horror stories like the following from 22-year-old child care worker Megan Jameson.“Just after I was first diagnosed with diabetes my boyfriend gave me a big basket of chocolates for Valentines Day,” she says. “I thanked him politely but I really couldn’t eat any of them because the sugar would have killed me. He may as well have ordered me a coffin.”Stories like this are rare but they again illustrate that thinking before you spend is vital.Another great but slightly more risqué gift idea is lingerie. Nothing is more likely to spice up your Valentines Day evening than a chemise or teddy which makes your woman feel sexy. When buying lingerie it is of course important to think about what your partner likes to wear as well as what you would like to see her in. It is also a good idea to know what size she is or ask her to come out and choose it with you if you don’t want to risk insult. If you are looking for something for the man in your life, why not buy a romantic dinner for two gift basket or take him out to a favourite restaurant.Food is often said to be the way to a man’s heart and a candle lit dinner is something both of you can appreciate.College student Ryan Forde, 23, says one of the best Valentines Day gifts he has ever received was a pre-prepared picnic near the lake where he and his girlfriend Lucy went on their first date.“It has been ages since that first date and I had forgotten what it felt like when you first fall in love. Going back to the spot brought back all the old memories.”If you have a little more money and you are looking to buy something that will last a lifetime, jewellery may be the best option. It’s the kind of gift you would buy someone you had been with for a while because buying the right earrings, bracelet or ring requires a good knowledge of what your partner likes.Jewellery saleswoman Sharon Patterson, 29, says there are so many different items of jewellery available that you need to know your partner well before making the purchase.“Do they like gold or silver? Would they prefer earrings, a ring or a bracelet? Do they have allergies to certain metals? It’s important to know the answer to all of these questions before you buy jewellery because it’s not always the cheapest of gifts.”If you or your relationship is a little younger stuffed toys can be a good choice for the girl in your life.Teddy bears and other stuffed toys are a classic gift for girls between the ages of 14 and 17. A good stuffed toy can range in price from $20 for a basic stuffed teddy bear to over $200 for a large version with accompanying gift basket.High school student Hayden McMillan, 15, says his girlfriend was thrilled with the teddy bear which came in a gift basket he gave her last Valentines Day. “I was worried that she might not like the present but she loved how soft and cuddly it was.” Finally, if you will be spending this Valentines Day apart, a webcam makes an ideal gift. There’s no better way to keep in touch if you spend long periods of time apart than using a webcam with Skype, Yahoo Messenger or Microsoft Messenger and chatting with your loved one face to face. After all, Valentines Day is about showing your loved one you care, even if a fat wallet can make the job easier. So good luck buying the right gift and showering your loved one with affection on the only day of the year dedicated entirely to showing your partner that you really do care.
