Growing Wild Plant Awareness with an Inventive Nature Trail.

by James Ash

thanks-a-bunch.co.uk have today announced a wild flower preservation initiative with the intention of increasing wildlife awareness. The initiative will take the form of a 'Nature Trail' tailored specifically by geographical area compiled by regional preservation trusts. The Trail will be available for free download at www.thanks-a-bunch.co.uk and includes a guide to plants and flora in any chosen location. Aimed at the botanist at the lower end of the chronological spectrum, the guide uses the cartoon character 'Little Pete' who provides a jovial and almost 'cuddly' introduction to the world of wild plants and flowers. Designed to get families and children into the country and actively taking part in the wildlife around them, the guide provides pictures of local common species. The aim of the trail is to the identify the wild plants using the guide and to then make a note of stock levels in the area. Little Pete gives interesting plant information along the trail such as heritage, medicinal purpose and even how some plants can be used in cooking (Dandelion coffee however is something this author is may steer clear of!). The guide centres on interaction between family members and the local habitat making for a fun filled and educational Summer afternoon. When a trail has been completed it can be uploaded to the thanks-a-bunch website where details of stock levels and other participants findings can be observed though charts and other interactive graphical aids with an emphasis on accessibility. The information collected is to be passed onto wildlife preservation societies who will use the figures to help build a national picture of plant and wildlife levels around the countries regions. James Henderson from thanks-a-bunch.co.uk says, "We are trying to promote plant awareness amongst the younger generation really, hopefully if they get interested in plants and conservation from an early age it is something that will stay with them." He goes on "It really adds to your enjoyment of the country side if you know a little bit about it, rather than just thinking oh there's some green stuff, or what a nice yellow flower I wonder what that is called..." The trail is certainly an excellent idea, and has the right mixture of fun, education and interaction to ensure it is enjoyed by all the family. The guide is due to be published this year will be available from www.thanks-a-bunch.co.uk
