Facts about Skin Cancer: What You Don’t Know Can Hurt You
From the office of Dr. Laurence Magne, author of www.cancer-free-for-life.com
Of the various forms of cancer, skin cancer is one of the most well advertised and publicly known. Everyone knows that they should either stay out of the sun or lather themselves up with sunscreen, because everyone knows that the sun is dangerous. However, just because everyone knows something doesn’t make it true. The facts about skin cancer are probably going to surprise you.
Most commercially available sunscreens only block out the ultraviolet rays known as UVB, which cause sunburns and potentially some skin cancer. However, they do next to nothing to block out UVA rays which are more likely to cause skin cancer. The problem is compounded by the fact that people tend to spend more time out in the sun after they’ve coated themselves with sunscreen, increasing their exposure to UVA rays and increasing their chances of skin cancer.
Worse, many of the chemicals in sunscreen may be toxic and carcinogenic. Because the public has been led to believe that the use of sunscreen is not only safe, but healthy, people coat themselves in chemicals which then seep in through pores and have an extremely damaging effect on the overall health.
The lifelong effects of chemical sunscreen are just beginning to be seriously studied, but it is not surprising that the ongoing application of chemicals to the skin is likely to produce problematic outcomes. Regardless of the facts about skin cancer, the ongoing pollution of the human body with chemicals should be of concern to everyone.
Sunlight is a key source for vitamin D, which is developed when bodies are exposed to the UVB rays of the sun. Vitamin D has been shown to be anti-carcinogenic, meaning that it can help prevent and treat a variety of cancers. Because this is the key protection offered by most sunscreens, too many people are creating an inner environment devoid of this cancer fighting vitamin in the name of preventing skin cancer.
This is one of the facts about skin cancer you’re probably unaware of and one of the more disturbing, since you’re potentially trading a fairly benign form of cancer for a much more serious form. The lack of vitamin D and the lack of exposure to healthy amounts of sunlight can be traced to breast, colon and prostate cancer.
Evidence is showing that the greatest danger for skin cancer from the sun comes from burning. The safest way to enjoy the sun is to expose yourself to the sun in small increments, so that your skin can adjust. Avoiding sun burn, and not avoiding the sun, is probably the most effective thing you can do to prevent cancer.
