Think & Grow Rich - 1. Burning Desire
I want to go into my understanding of one of the greatest books ever written, "Think & Grow Rich" by Napoleon Hill. If you haven't picked up this book or the audio, you absolutely must immediately. It's regarded as one of the most influential books to success ever created.
The first of the thirteen principles expresses the need for the burning desire for something. You may think that you have a burning desire right now for success. I am going to tell you that most of the people who read this blog do not have that desire at all. A burning desire goes beyond wanting something intensely. Just because you want something doesn't mean you are willing to get it. You will get what you need, nothing more. When you are able to actually change the way you perceive this want into a need, you will get it. You see, you need water, you need air, you do not need a new Bentley.
This is precisely why many successful individuals do not reach success until they have hit rock bottom and are forced to climb their way back out. How many movie stars, or businessmen were dead broke before they made their millions? That is because when you have a "decent" job and are "getting by" you are content with your surroundings. Even though you may not think that you are content and that you are still "hungry", if when faced with a serious obstacle, you opt to give up rather than overcome, then you are not serious. Let me tell you my story. I owned a fairly successful real estate business (brokerage and investments). I also flew for the AF Reserves every month. We had a house on the intercoastal with 9 foot doors and 14 foot ceilings, it is very beautiful. We decided that we hated how much I flew and risked my life in the desert and the danger of being a low income landlord (you can be killed over a couple hundred dollars there). We opted to move to Washington D.C. because we had the opportunity to learn to build businesses from some millionaires that I had met. Also, Audrey had the opportunity to become a model for the fitness company BSN. We closed our real estate business and headed to the nation's capital. We shut ourselves off from everything else and set our attention to making a million dollars in one year. That year isn't up yet, but we're perfectly on track and have never worked as hard or been as focused as we have been in business.
A burning desire develops within when you make success your only option. You think about it constantly, you obsess over it, you become it. You forget about everything else. When you've committed so deeply that you are willing to sleep 3-4 hours a night, forego all other obligations and force success with everything you do, then you have a burning desire. When you have that, and people tell you No, or obstacles get in your way, you quickly find a way around those obstacles, or through them, it doesn't matter, YOU WILL HAVE SUCCESS!
When you have that, you will have a burning desire. "Think & Grow Rich" develops upon what I have just said in such an amazing way that you just have to read it to believe it.
