Poker Coaching An EV Decision

by youcoachpoker

Whether you are a recreational player or a professional, getting poker coaching is a great investment. The strategy and skills you will learn will boost your confidence. Even those who play exclusively at home games, a few lessons will drastically change your experience. Playing poker is fun, but crushing the games is even more fun. Soon your friends will be coming to you for advice.

For the professional, does it make sense as an investment? How ev is it? Most coaches charge an hourly rate of about one buyin or less for the stakes they will teach for cash games or around one or two times their hourly rate for tournaments.

Lets take a closer look at the return on an investment of cash game players. Many students will see an increase in BB/100, big bets per 100 hands, between ½ and 1 in the first three coaching sessions. Sessions can be in many form which include sweating (watching someone play) and talking with them through skype, listening to poker strategy, or reviewing a poker training video together. That means a minimum of ½ BB in 3 hours and a maximum of 1 BB/100 in on hour. How quickly will you gain back what you invested? For three hours you will have paid the coach 150 BB (300 big blinds). This means you will need to play on average 30,000 hands for it to be profitable. Most regulars do more than this on one month. At the other end of our range, 1 BB in one hour, that would mean you would need to play only 5,000 hands to start freerolling on your investment.

So what do these figures tell you? If you are a professional player who plays more than 30,000 hands a month, than it absolutely makes sense to get a poker coach for a few hours a month. Not only will you increase the money you earn while playing but most sites, like Pokerstars, Full Tilt Poker, Cake, Bodog, etc, offer greater rewards the higher stakes you play and the more rake you accrue. So hiring a professional poker coach is even more ev because of this.

Obviously these numbers will vary, as it is easier to beat the the micro stakes than it is to beat the nose bleeds. But, you will also be be getting poker coaching from a better coach as you move up. Not all players start on the same level as well. You will see more gains if you are breaking even at one stake than if you are making 2.5BB/100.
