Clothes, the Grandfather of RetailClothing is considered to be the coverings for the human body or limbs, also including coverings for the hands, feet, and head. It has adorned the human form since 30,000 B.C., according to current archeological research, and has developed into a symbol of wealth, status, and value. Because of this symbolism, humans the world round desire clothing that will grant the perception of importance and acceptance to other humans, and thus, the market for the sale of clothing is extremely alive. Whether the desired social message pertains to social status, occupation, ethnicity, marital status, or religious affiliation, clothing provides the vehicle to broadcast such messages. In the retail business, it is important to understand this human fixation in order to best provide the garment tools that human desire for their everyday lives. All humans known to modern history have worn some sort of clothing, also known as garments, attire, or apparel. They have worn clothing for both functional and social causes, for clothing protects the weak human flesh from extreme weather and other environmental threats. Although this may have been the primary catalyst for producing clothing, cultural and social meanings soon followed. Somehow humans developed a system of connotations that deciphers the messages transmitted by clothing. However, these traditional understandings are not always consistent amongst different cultures. If separate ethnic or cultural groups of humans read the same item of clothing or adornment differently, the bearer of such garments may cause diverse reactions. Therefore, it is important to understand the culture group and traditions of the cultures you wish to sell clothing articles to.Though this may seem a complicated system for sending social messages, somehow mankind has managed to make it a very simple process. Fashion comes and goes, and important accessories or appearances shift and change with the ease of time. As this occurs, older generations may not understand, just as languages shift and mold over time. A native English speaker of 2006 would have some difficulty communicating with an English speaker of the 15th century, so goes the messages of clothing. For this reason the clothing industry is perfect of the business of retail. It is an ever changing, always vital part of the human existence. The human race has always needed it, not only for survival but also for personal recognition. If you ever doubt the importance of your retail position in wardrobe sales, consider the meaning of clothing to the human race. Realize that it is a product from the very center of what makes us human, our intelligence for survival and our desire to be known. It is a great service to provide humans with an accessible path to sending the world a message of who they are. No other forms of communication (books, internet, phones) are greater than this oldest of expressions. About the Author: Ron Maier is the Vice President of S
