Applying For Alcohol Licences

by Paul Howe

By law there are two important licences you need to be aware of if you are planning to sell alcohol on a premise on a permanent basis. The first is the premises licence and the second is the premises licence. Any premises must have a licence and have an individual with a personal licence in a position of power to be legally allowed to sell alcohol. A personal licence is not necessary for each employee in a pub or bar. However, the individual who authorises the sale of alcohol - i.e. the manager or owner of the business, must have a personal licence.

How Can I Apply For Licences?

A premises alcohol licence or a personal alcohol licence must be applied for via your local council. Depending on your council the application will be made either online or via post. To determine whether or not they accept online applications you will have to contact the council directly.

When you complete and send your licence application you will also have to enclose the licence fee. The amount your licence costs is calculated depending on non-domestic rateable value (NDRV) of the property. Different properties have different NDRVs and these can be found online. On top of this one off payment you will also have to pay a yearly fee.

Copies of your licence application may also have to be sent to relevant 'responsible authorities' these include the police, the fire service, the environmental health authority and so on.

Personal Licences

Any individual who is applying for a personal licence must hold a relevant licensing qualification such as: National Certificate for Personal Licence Holders (NCPLH) Level 2. They must also be over the age of eighteen. If your council grants your personal licence application you will hold the licence for ten years. Renewals of licences are also dealt with via your local council.

Licensing Problems?

It is possible for you to have your licence to be taken away if the council sees fit. You can seek legal guidance if you feel that your company's licence has been unfairly revoked. If you need legal support regarding licensing, contact a solicitor today who specialises in dealing with licensing issues.
