The Changing World of Online Download Songs

by Kathy Stearns

Lots of people all around the world use the Internet to get download songs from their favorite artists. Constant changes in the technology of music and audio playback have had a lot to do with the evolution of how people get their music. Most people now listen to songs as MP3 files instead of CD's, cassettes, and records, which used to be the standards. The majority of people use portable MP3 players and are happy to be downloading music that can be loaded right onto these devices; computer music players make it easy to sync your music onto your phone or device too. There will always be a few individuals who prefer to have a physical copy of their music, like a record or CD, but downloading music is the most popular option now.

Even within the world of Internet download songs, a lot has changed in the recent past. There was a time when free downloads were the most common way to get music. These services, however, became the focus of large legal battles directed against copyright infringement by the music industry and many recording artists. While there are still some around, this is no longer the primary method in which people get their music online.

The Internet is home to many different websites and stores where you can obtain download songs for a low rate and in that way have access to all the music you want. You might even use a music player on your PC that allows you to automatically connect to an online music store. Many sites allow you to peruse their library of artists and songs. Then you can choose which ones you want and download either individual songs or entire albums.

A fine benefit of buying your music on the Internet is that the songs and albums usually cost less than they would if you got the same ones on CD in a store. Downloaded music tends to be less expensive since there are no overhead costs for the creation of the disc itself or the packaging involved in making a CD. Another good reason to buy your music online is that you can preview the songs you want before you actually pay for them.

Lots of people create their own music collection by downloading songs they've heard on TV or the radio and saving them on the computer. What if you only want to buy one song instead of a whole album's worth of music? While this was not possible in the age of CD's, you can pick and choose exactly which songs you want to buy when you download your music online. Download songs let you spend less on exclusively the songs you really want to listen to.
