With the recent success of Team GB's cycling squads at the London 2012 Olympics and, in particular, Chris Hoy's achievements as the UK's greatest ever Olympian, cycling has never had a more prominent spot in the limelight in this country.

Indeed, when one of the coaching staff of Team GB was interviewed on TV, he went on to explain that this monumental achievement from the GB Team is likely to make cycling a much more popular activity – explaining just how easily it can be picked up;

So, if you are wondering about whether or not it is a good idea to slip into some Lycra and look out some reflectors, here are some great reasons why cycling could be the perfect way for you to keep fit.

It's Exciting, Cheap and Accessible

If you have ever been a member of a gym or sometimes frequent a squash court, you'll know that working out has never been more expensive!

Maybe you have thought about getting some equipment to use at home…but think about how much room it will take up…not to mention, there is a very real danger of the stuff becoming nothing more than an ornament to gather dust…with cycling, all you need is a bike and some safety equipment!

Staring at a wall whilst pumping iron can be a really dull activity, which you will not get results from without 100% dedication and focus.

Cycling is brilliant, because once you have bought your bicycle, helmet and lights, you are pretty much set up for decades – not only does the bike become a workout tool, but you can also use it as a mode of transport – something which will add an element of excitement!

Of course, there are bikes out there which will set you back several thousand pounds: but similarly, if you are on the hunt for cheap bicycles, you can find them aplenty;

We recommend that you have a look at mountain, road and hybrid bikes to see which variety suits your needs best.

It Builds Strong Muscles

Recently, whilst Team GB were busy getting gold medals, the male German Olympic Track Cycling Team were in the news over their 'quad off' – these guys essentially used Twitter to compare each other's amazing quadriceps: if you have seen the shots, your jaw must have dropped! (Just do a Google image search for: 'Robert Forstemann' or 'quad off' to see what cycling can do to your muscles!).

Even if a 'Popeye' like physique is not what you are looking for, there is no doubt that cycling will provide you with toned muscles and help you to burn off some fat – it is an excellent cardiovascular activity: just ask the Tour De France cyclists – these are athletes who know a thing or two about endurance!

We recommend that you do not buy the first bike that you see as there a variety of Hybrid Bikes and Cheap Road Bikes that you can buy.
